Getting fit is all about mindset. But sometimes it feels as if the whole universe is against the idea of use getting fit. No matter how hard we try, something always gets in the way, and we never end up actually getting the body we want. Sometimes, life just gets in the way. But other times, it’s down to what we’re doing as individuals. Here are some of the most annoying issues that can derail even the best-laid fitness plans.

Negative Self-Talk

Negative self-talk, also known as the “I can’t” syndrome, is something which holds back millions of people from reaching their fitness goals according to It’s the idea that you’re so undisciplined or have so little time that you’ll never be able to reach your fitness goals, regardless of how hard you work.

Suffice to say, negative self-talk is a great way to derail your fitness aspirations before they even get off the ground. As a result, this sort of internal conversation is self-defeating. If you listened to all the negative voices in your head, you’d never get anywhere in life. Some advice? Switch off from this unhealthy behavior and focus on all the things you CAN do.

On the other end of the spectrum are people who throw everything into their training. They’re in the gym at 6 am every morning before work, cranking out set after set on the squat rack.

Working hard towards your goals is a necessary part of getting fit. But it turns out that training too hard is bad for you and can lead to “overtraining” where your body can no longer keep up with the demands being placed on it. Usually, it takes several weeks to enter a state of overtraining, but once you’ve reached it, you’ll know it. All of a sudden you feel exhausted all the time. On top of that, the amount of weight you can lift in the gym is actually going down, not up. Training too hard can be counterproductive, so listen to your body when it tells you to dial back your training sessions.

Eating The Wrong Foods

Guzzling down gallon after gallon of protein shake might sound like a good idea to build muscle. But if it leads to a chronic upset stomach, it’s counterproductive. According to, many people suffer from IBS-related symptoms, especially if they suddenly change their diets. These symptoms can sap your body of energy and leave you feeling lethargic and tired. The last thing you want to do after spending an hour on the toilet is to go and do a hardcore workout. It’s worth checking whether there are any probiotics you can take to restore digestive balance or whether any particular foods, like dairy products, are leading to unpleasant symptoms.

The majority of people who have kids or a job are under high levels of stress. As a result, they imagine that they don’t have time to do exercise. But for these people, exercise is actually their friend. A 20-minute jog or bike ride can dramatically improve your mood and your focus, reducing stress and helping you get more done.
