It can sometimes feel as though we are told on a daily basis about ways to make our bodies look better. Diet plans, contoured makeup, the latest fitness craze…most of us have heard it all! There is, of course, nothing wrong with wanting to look your best, especially if doing so is something that makes you feel extra confident. But one worrying thing about these types of trends is that they all focus on aesthetics, rather than how healthy we are inside. We all know that you can be a tiny size six and still be unhealthy on the inside, and this can ultimately lead to you living a shorter life. Everyone wants to live for as long as possible and to do so in a healthy manner. After all, who wouldn’t want to be still walking around, engaging in life and physical activity well into their eighties and nineties? If living a long life is high up on your list of priorities, here are some ways you can keep yourself safe and healthy for all those years to come.
Cutting out the bad habits
Unfortunately, many people develop bad habits in their younger years that can easily cut off the amount of time they have in the future. There’s nothing wrong with indulging a little from time to time – after all, enjoying the occasional treat is what makes us human and is what keeps us engaged in life. Without them, life would be very boring! But moderation, and in some cases total cold turkey is key. Habits such as smoking and drug use can easily shorten your life by making you more susceptible to illnesses or potentially fatal accidents. Alcohol is a big part of our culture so cutting in out completely isn’t always possible, but try and monitor how much you drink.
Taking direct action
It’s no secret that maintaining a healthy weight is a major player in the key to living a long life. But for some people, sticking to a healthy diet and getting regular exercise isn’t all that easy. Some people have issues with emotional eating, while others suffer from a slow metabolism. If either of these sounds like you, you may want to consider having weight loss surgery. It might sound invasive and extreme at first, but if it can set you on the right path for the rest of your life, it’s got to be a good thing.
…mentally and physically. So many of us think that the key to a long life is pumping iron in the gym week in, week out. While taking care of your body is a huge part of it all, so is taking care of your mind. Many people entering old age end up becoming reclusive due to their unwillingness to leave the house or to socialize with other people, and this can leave them frail. Make an effort to do things as you once did even as you get older, even if you have to slow down a little.
