It’s not that you’re lazy exactly. It’s just that you’ve never really got the exercise thing. It’s not something that’s been a part of your life.

There are many well-documented benefits of exercising. These include maintaining a healthy weight, increasing energy levels, and promoting good health, etc. You don’t like the gym, but you want to start exercising. You just don’t know where to start.

Start Small

If you’re a beginner to exercise, we suggest starting small. Any addition to physical exertion will be beneficial, even if it’s ten minutes a day. Note, it is always advisable to get checked out by your doctor before embarking on an exercise plan.  It is particularly important if you have any pre-existing health conditions.

Try and assess how fit you are and what you could reasonably manage. Set yourself some exercise goals. What do you want to achieve? Are you looking to lose weight? Do you want to increase energy levels? Or, are you looking at something more ambitious like half marathon training? Your goals and level of fitness will help you work out the type of exercise that will suit you.

Don’t try and do too much all at once. If you’re out of shape, you’re going to ache. A lot. And you may even do some damage. Also, if you do too much too soon, you’re less likely to stick to a routine. Being consistent with your exercise is important.

Get the Right Gear

Unless you’re embarking on a specialist activity, you don’t need expensive clothing. Just find clothes that are comfortable and that are suitable for your sport. Footwear is important, especially for high impact exercise. Ask advice as to which training shoes will provide the best support.



Create a Routine

Set up a routine and stick to it. Try to exercise at the same times each week. Work out what works best for you. If you prefer walking or running first thing in the morning, then do it. If you hate early mornings and would prefer to work out after work, then do that. There are no rules. It’s up to you. The important thing is that it becomes part of your routine.

Go At Your Own Pace

Go at your own pace and don’t try to push yourself in the early stages. Pushing yourself too much when you’re not used to physical exertion can cause injury. Make sure you warm up and warm down.

Beware of Boredom

Try to vary your activities to avoid getting bored. If your work out plan becomes boring you’re not likely to stick to it. Try to keep things as interesting as possible. If you’re walking or running change the route and create a running playlist on your MP3 player. Invite friends to join you if that feels comfortable.

Make a Start

The important thing is that you make a start. Make the decision, assess your fitness, create some goals and go for it. Some things will work for you and some things won’t You can always make changes along the way.

Remember that any exercise is good. Even the smallest changes will reap rewards. Start small and keep on going.
