Process of Radon Mitigation

Radon is a type of radioactive gas released when rocks contain metals such as uranium, thorium, or radium present breaks. This gas then seeps from the cracks and holes in the flooring or building and enters your house. The process of Radon mitigation is used to reduce radon gas concentrations in the breathing zones of occupied buildings or in water supplies.

You cannot see this gas nor smell it, yet Radon can have a dangerous effect on your health. Studies have indicated that it is a significant cause of lung cancer. According to EPA, every year, 21,000 people die due to lung cancer caused by radon gas. You must test the level of Radon in your home or offices.

1) Check the existing level of Radon

Initially, you must carry a test to identify the current level of Radon in your home. You will need a radon detector to take the test. The sensor can be short-term or long-term, depending on your budget. 

The small-term detector works for a few days, and you can throw them away after the assessment. The short-term sensor includes alpha-track detectors, charcoal liquid, scintillation devices, and electret ion chamber detectors. The reading took over as a short period is not so precise as they show resistance to a specific type of disturbance or change. 

It is preferable to buy a long-term detector are they give a more accurate result. It shows you the initial reading, the reading during the test and the task after the test. They can be used for an extended period as thus are economical in the long run. 

Conduct regular test to remain up to date about your current radon levels. If the level is less than four pCi/L, you are in the red zone (higher risk). If it lies between 2 pCi/L to 4pCi/L, there is nothing to worry about condition. 

2) Ventilation is the key!

Another way to reduce the level of Radon is by ensuring that your house is adequately ventilated all the time. Proper ventilation will not allow the Radon to remain in the home. The lowermost level of the house must be appropriately ventilated lowermost level as Radon is at its peak. 

Different type of house has other foundation. It can include basement, crawlspace, slab on grade foundation. To lower the radon level in the basement and slab on grade, the foundation employs sub-slab suction, draw tile suction, sump hole suction, or block wall suction. Under Action Sub Slab Suction, multiple pipes are inserted in the soil underneath your house through the floor. This inlet lets the Radon out. 

In crawl space, one must cover the earth floor with a high-density plastic sheet and employ an exhaust fan with a vent pipe. The fan passes the Radon from beneath the sheet towards the vent, which passes the gas out. You can hire a radon mitigation service, and they will install this system after assessment.   

3) Sealing all the cracks

You can seal the crack in the foundation and walls of the structure as they are the source from which radon gas escapes. By closing the gap, you ensure that the gas does not enter your house, reducing the gas level significantly. 

The method is not as effective as others as it is challenging to identify the cracks and holes. Overall, this method can reduce the level of Radon to half of the original level.
