Over the last decade or so, the foreign population living in Spain rose from 2% to 12%. If you’ve ever visited the country, then you’ll understand why. Not only is it a beautiful place, but it’s also one of the places in Western Europe that has the lowest cost of living.
If you’re thinking about picking up and moving to a different country, then Spain might be on your list.
Don’t know anything about this sunny nation? Not to worry. In this article, I’ll give you the top 10 reasons to move to Spain.
Table of Contents
1. The Weather Is Marvelous
In many parts of the country, they receive over 120 days of sunshine. Both Madrid and Barcelona place on the list of top 10 sunniest destinations in Europe, so if you’re a fan of the sun, you’ll definitely enjoy yourself in Spain.
Spain is also one of the warmest countries in Europe, so if you need to keep your bones away from the damp and the cold, this also makes it a good place to move to. All seasons are dry, so you won’t have to worry about moisture in the air.
However, do note that Spain does have very cold winters. However, the fantastic summers will more than make up for that!
2. There Are Lots of Different Climates
Yes, I just got done telling you Spain is wonderfully hot and dry. But the truth is, this country is amazingly diverse in its climates. In general, you’ll find 3 climates: Mediterranean, intercontinental, and maritime.
For most people, they’ll want to live by the Mediterranean, where you’ll experience the hot, dry weather I talked about above.
But if you’d rather not roast in the sun, then I’d suggest you move up north. Here, you’ll enjoy cooler climates that won’t have you sweating buckets once the summer arrives. You’ll even get to see snow in the winter if you move to Asturias!
3. It’s Easy and Cheap to Travel Around
Is your wish to travel all over Europe and even Africa, but previously found it difficult? Then that can all be solved when you move to Spain.
Spain is at the corner of West Europe, which makes it very easy to travel to both the rest of the EU and the top bits of Africa, such as Morocco.
Many methods of transportation are available to you, including flights, and rides on trains, buses, and even ferries.
Not only will it be easier to get to destinations on your bucket list, but it’ll also be cheaper. For example, EasyJet always has low-priced deals for short flights. You’ll often find round-trip tickets for under €100!
4. The Cost of Living Is Low
As I’ve said above, the cost of living in Spain is probably the lowest you’ll see in all of Western Europe.
For example, a 3-course meal for 2 people at a mid-range restaurant will cost you around just €35.00! And if you’re looking at grocery prices, 1 kilogram of chicken breasts will cost around €5.90, while a liter of milk will cost around €0.76.
As far as renting an apartment goes, that’s pretty cheap as well. Inside city centers, it’ll cost around €647 a month for a 1-bedroom apartment; if you look outside city centers, you can find some places that charge just under €500 a month.
Do keep in mind that although the cost of living is low, the salaries are low as well. The average salary in Spain is a little under €1,300 after taxes, so don’t expect high wages.
5. There’s Great Healthcare
If you come from America, then you’ll know the pains of a healthcare system that’s mediocre and costly. One major benefit of moving to Spain is you’ll get great healthcare!
In fact, it ranks #7 in the world for best healthcare while the US ranks 37th. This should speak volumes on how good you’ll be taken care of in while residing in this country.
Not only that, but the prices for healthcare will also be much more affordable. What could cost $1,000 in the United States could cost as little as $600 in Spain.
So if you have some health concerns but can’t afford to currently have them addressed, you’ll find it a financial relief to get it taken care of in Spain instead. Plus, you’ll be under the care of top-notch healthcare professionals.
6. It’s Rich With Delicious Cuisine
Even if you aren’t a foodie, Spain’s food is sure to entice you to stay. With so many seaside locations, this country is rich in seafood dishes that’ll tantalize your tastebuds.
If you’re tired of all the mega-sized portions in America, then you’ll find Spanish cuisine to be refreshing. A common meal they have is tapas, where small portions of food are served. It’s great for sharing, and you get to try different things!
Spain is most famous for its paella, which is a rice dish flavored with either meat or seafood. Other things you need to try gazpacho, patatas, fideua, Jamon, croquetas, albondigas, migas, and fabada. You can find most of these things at tapas, so get to taste testing!
7. There’s Fantastic Wine
Back in your home country, restaurants may serve exotic Spanish wines with high price tags. When you live in the source country, then you won’t have to worry about shelling out the big bucks for good wine anymore.
In major cities, it’ll cost under €3 for a glass of red wine; it’s even cheaper if you’re dining in a smaller village. It’s so affordable you’ll be able to have a whole bottle for dinner without breaking the bank.
In grocery stores, it’s the same idea. There are so many top-quality Spanish wines that cost under €5. You’ll soon get so used to it that anything over €5 will feel like a splurge!
For those of you who like dessert wines, you’ll want to try the Andalucian selection. Other parts of Spain are known for producing red and white wines, while Andalucia is known for its dessert wines.
If you’re not a fan of wine, there’s also vermouth. This is a huge part of tapas culture and you can enjoy it in reds or whites.
8. There Are Affordable and Beautiful Beachside Properties
A house by the beach in California will cost you a pretty penny; you can expect to pay over $1 million for those. As a result, living by the ocean is but a pipe dream for many Americans.
However, it’s a different story in Spain. They have beaches that are just as nice as American ones, if not better. And the best thing is, they’re super affordable!
The beachfront apartments are amazing and make you feel like you’re living in paradise. You can find many listings for under €400,000, which is quite a steal when you compare those prices with American ones.
Just imagine waking up every morning to a fantastic view outside. Not to mention, a short walk to a leisurely afternoon on the beach.
9. There’s Lots of History
When you look at a country like the United States, it seems like a baby, especially when compared to any European country. Spain is definitely no exception.
Throughout the years, Spain’s been host to several major civilizations. For example, there are the Celtics, Iberians, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Greeks, and the Moors. All of these cultures have shaped Spain to be what it is today, and you’ll find hints of them everywhere.
If you’re a history buff, then you’ll definitely lose yourself here. You can spend countless afternoons in museums and parks, where you’ll find marks of history everywhere. This includes the Santiago de Compostela, which is a 2,000-year-old Roman aqueduct.
10. The Locals Are Very Friendly
One of your biggest worries about moving to a foreign country is how well you’ll be received by the locals. In this case, you’ll be pleased to know that the Spanish are very welcoming and will make an effort to get to know you.
This is because they’re big on communities and families. If you ever feel like you’re struggling, know that you can most likely rely on the locals to help you out in a pinch.

A move to Spain may seem daunting, but when you consider all the benefits that come with it, it’s worth uprooting yourself from America or any other place in the world.
