Common Kid’s Foot Issues

Flatfoot: Pediatric flat feet is something that some children experience. Most kids with flat feet do not have symptoms from it. However, some may find that it makes it hard for them to participate in sporting activities. a child that is experiencing cramping in their legs or feet should have their feet examined in case they have pediatric flatfoot.

Calcaneal Apophysitis (Also known as Sever’s Disease): Calcaneal apophysitis is a condition which causes inflammation of the growth plate in the heel. It is most common in children aged between 8 and 14 because at those ages the calcaneus (heel bone) is not fully developed. There is new bone forming at the back of the heel and if a child experiences repetitive stress on that area then it can become inflamed.

Ingrown Toenails: Both adults and children can suffer from ingrown toenails. They are common in children who wear shoes or socks that are too tight, or if their nails are not trimmed correctly. Some people simply have nails that tend to curve inward even if they are cut correctly. If the nail breaks the skin then there is the risk of serious infection. Do not try to dig the nail out yourself, take your child to the doctor to have it done properly.

Plantar Warts (Verrucas): Plantar warts are a common issue that children and adolescents are frequently affected by. These warts can grow deep into the foot and can be quite painful. They are caused by HPV, the same virus that causes warts elsewhere on the body. The good news is that it is possible to treat them and to prevent them from spreading.
