From a young age, most of us are taught the differences between what are ‘healthy’ things to engage in and what kind of behaviors we need to avoid. For example, we all know not to indulge in too much fast food and to avoid drinking too much alcohol. Perhaps when we were younger and were still living with our parents, we adhered strictly to these kinds of rules, to avoid biting the hand that feeds. But once the credit card is in our hand and we have complete jurisdiction over whatever goes in our shopping basket, it can be all too tempting to take that ‘treat yourself’ mentality to a whole new level. After all, it’s fun, right? But remember that it’s only fun while you are still young and reasonably fit. Indulging frequently in things we know are bad for us will only result in us suffering health problems in later life. By this time, it may be too late to repent and to turn back the clock. If you have become health-conscious but don’t want to give up your treats, here are some ways to still enjoy your luxuries but in a much healthier way.

Alcohol

Enjoyed responsibly, alcohol can be one of the finer things in life. A crisp pint of lager on a hot summer’s day, a mid-week glass of wine with your feet up, watching a movie… it doesn’t get much better! But, just in the same way that fries are more unhealthy than boiled potatoes, some alcoholic drinks are worse for you than others. Beer can be especially calorific, which is why a lot of people claim to feel bloated after a heavy night downing pints. Sugary cocktails are also ones to avoid. But surprisingly, some alcoholic drinks can actually have health benefits. Red wine is one of them as it contains tannins, which, when consumed moderately, can be good for the heart.

Nicotine

It’s so secret that nicotine is bad for you, no matter which way you decide to consume it. But more and more dedicated smokers are moving away from traditional cigarettes due to the many health risks. Tobacco (the substance in which nicotine is naturally found) contains up to 2000 other chemicals – meaning that many people who smoke cigarettes don’t really know what they are putting in their bodies. If you have a smoking habit but want to be a little healthier, why not switch to smoking e-liquids instead?

Chocolate

Hands up who’s got a sweet tooth? That will be quite a few of us, then. Having a taste for candy is something that seems harmless at first, but if consumed in great amounts over many years, it can lead to serious health problems. As well as causing you to gain weight, excessive chocolate consumption can also lead to dental cavities, diabetes and Gastroesophageal reflux. However, it’s not all bad news. Some chocolate is actually good for you, to a certain extent – so you can literally have your cake and eat it! Just choose dark chocolate with a high cocoa percentage. The chocolate itself derives from the cacao plant which is a great source of antioxidants. All the better of an excuse to have that extra square!
