Some people find getting fit incredibly easy, while for others of us, it seems to take forever to notice any changes to our fitness levels. Of course, what it’s important to remember when it comes to getting in shape is that we’re all different and our bodies function in slightly different ways. However, that being said, if you’re struggling to get fit, it could be that you’re not working out in the right way or that one of your lifestyle choices is holding you back.

To make the process of getting fit easier for yourself and to ensure success, here’s what you need to know:

Not every minute of exercise counts

Although every movement is good for you, the truth is that not every minute of exercise counts. For your body to start burning fat, you need to have been exercising for 20 minutes. So if you only do 30 minutes a day in the gym, you’re only really doing 10 minutes of exercise because the first 20 minutes are when your body is warming up. Perhaps this could be why you are struggling to get fit because you’re not exercising for long enough. Aim to workout for at least 45 minutes each time you hit the gym, to ensure that you’re getting the most out of your workout.

Working out should be hard

If you’re not feeling the burn, you’re not putting enough into your workout. Workouts shouldn’t be easy, in order to work your body, your workout needs to push you. Exercise is meant to raise your heart rate, cause your muscles to burn and make you somewhat short of breath. Exercising gets easier over time – the fitter you get, the easier your workouts will get. However, it’s important to understand that exercise will never be easy – it will always be work.

Your lifestyle can make getting fit harder

A lot of people fail to realise that when it comes to getting fit, their lifestyle can have an impact. Take your diet, for instance, if you don’t eat a healthy, wholesome diet, it can impact your success at the gym. Working out on a regular basis is not an excuse for eating unhealthily – to get your body in shape, you need to eat well and workout regularly. Or, let’s say you smoke, for example. If you smoke and are trying to get in shape, your smoking will make the process of getting fit much harder. That’s because cigarette smoke damages the lungs and makes you more prone to breathing problems, making exercise more difficult. If you opt to quit smoking, or at least swap to using e-cigarettes and e-liquid, you can improve your health, and make working out and getting fit easier.

It will take time

If you’re expecting to feel fitter and look better after just a week or two of working out, you’re in for a shock. Getting in shape and building fitness takes time, it’s not something that happens overnight. As a rule of thumb, getting fit takes around six to eight weeks when working out three to four times a week. Of course, how long it will take you to get fit will depend on your weight, as well as your fitness. For instance, someone who is a healthy weight will get fitter quicker than someone who is overweight. This is because if you’re overweight, your body needs to shed the extra weight before you can start getting fit.

So there you have it, everything that you need to know to make getting fit easier.
