Memory foam mattresses are designed to support the body by mimicking the body’s shape and posture. Due to this unique design, memory foam mattresses are sought out and thus should be cared for to guarantee longevity. The quality of a mattress can have lasting effects on a child’s sleep quality and overall health. Memory foam mattresses for kids are considered the best quality, particularly as their body needs more support as they grow.

While a good-quality memory foam mattress can last up to 10 years, regularly cleaning it can help prolong its quality. Memory foam mattresses can be used in all styles of kid’s beds. For example, bunk beds are considerably common in families with kids, and memory foam mattresses are often used to replace the traditional spring bunk bed mattress.

In addition, another popular style mattress for kids is the trundle bed. These beds are excellent for a small space because of their ability to be secured underneath the top bed. Traditionally, memory foam mattresses are used because they do not require a box spring, making them more practical to fit in the small space. The problem with this is that the trundle bed mattress is stored away; thus, bacteria and dust mites are more likely to build up.

Despite the style of bed your child sleeps in, if a memory foam mattress is used, it is necessary to maintain a cleaning schedule to prevent bacteria and dust buildup. Below are tips and tricks on how to spot clean and deep clean a memory foam mattress for kids.

1. Read the seller manual for special care instructions. This is an essential first step because all manufacturers have unique ways of designing their mattresses and may require unique ways to care for them.

2. Detach the removable cover if you have one. This can be washed in any washing

machine, but be sure to read the care instructions. The recommendation is to clean your mattress cover or switch it out every 1-2 weeks to reduce the buildup of bacteria and dust mites. Furthermore, it will help maintain the hygiene quality of the mattress.

3. Vacuum the mattress. Memory foam mattresses are made with fabric that attracts dust, dirt, and debris. Be sure to thoroughly vacuum the entire mattress before moving on to the next step to prevent the spreading of dirt and debris.

4. Make a cleaning solution. The most gentle solution is a mix of warm water and mild dish or laundry detergent. Dilute this in a 2:1 ratio for best results.  Ensure you are not using heavy-duty chemicals as this can destroy the memory

foam. Make a second solution for tough stains and strong odors. The perfect solution is made up of ¾ cup of lukewarm water and ¼ cup of white vinegar.

5. Begin spraying the soap and water solution on moderate stains. Be sure to use the solution sparingly, as excess liquid absorbed in the mattress can cause mold problems. Use a microfiber rag or sponge to clean the spot, lightly scrubbing in a circular motion.

6. For tough stains, use the water and vinegar solution, implementing the same scrubbing method. For strong odors, add baking soda to the water and vineger to help deodorize and lift the odor. This will help to absorb the liquid and to deodorize the mattress. Let this sit for about 8 hours, then vacuum the residual baking soda off the mattress. This method can also be used for liquid or food spills.

7. Allow the mattress to dry entirely. You can air-dry your mattress, or you can use a hair blower or fan to speed up the process. Either way, you must wait until it is thoroughly dry before replacing the sheets.

8. When the mattress has dried and is ready for use, you can place the cleaned cover and sheets back on the mattress.

In addition to regular cleaning or spot cleaning, it is beneficial to flip your mattress no more than every six months. Vacuum on the entire upper and lower side of the mattress. This is to remove all the dust and bacteria that build up over time under the bed.

Keep in mind that regularly cleaning your kid’s memory foam mattress provides many benefits. It helps prolong the life and quality of your mattress, saving you money. Moreover, it helps maintain proper hygiene by reducing dust mites, bacteria, and dirt. In some cases, mold or mildew will begin to grow in the mattress if it is not appropriately cared for, so regular cleaning will prevent this. Above all, a clean mattress will increase the overall quality of your child’s sleep, thus positively impacting their health. Following the above steps will ensure your memory foam mattress is taken care of and thoroughly cleaned.Â
