sleep tips

27% of Americans struggle with falling asleep, and nearly 70% struggle with it at least once a week. Are you one of those people dreaming of a good night’s sleep?

Luckily for you, there are a variety of tips to help you sleep you can try. Keep reading for a list of 10 sleep tips that’ll give you the sleep you desire.

1. Be Consistent

A regular sleep schedule will help your body make the most out of the time it spends resting. Although a spontaneous night out with friends can still happen, try to practice going to bed and waking up at around the same time.

2. Get Comfortable

Making sure that your sleep environment is as comfortable as possible will help you fall asleep quicker and sleep more soundly. Ensure that your bed is comfortable, with a supportive pillow. The room should also be dark and quiet.

3. Don’t Use Electronics Before Bed

While scrolling through social media or watching an episode of Netflix can be soothing, doing it before bed can impact your ability to sleep. The blue lights present disrupts your sleep cycle.

Try to put any electronics away 30 minutes before bed.

4. Avoid Caffeine

Caffeine affects different people differently, but try to avoid it in the evening nonetheless. Make a “cut-off time”, where once it reaches a certain hour you avoid drinking any caffeine.

5. Avoid Alcohol

Although alcohol does make some people sleepy, think of the last time you had a few too many drinks. Did you have a good night’s sleep? Most likely not.

That’s because alcohol can affect the quality of your sleep. Try not to drink it too close to bedtime.

6. Limit Your Naps

Sometimes after a busy morning or afternoon, it can be tempting to rest and take a nap. Yet napping can throw your whole sleep cycle off, particularly if you nap in the late afternoon or evening.

If you must nap, keep it to around 30 minutes in the early afternoon.

7. Don’t Be Too Hungry or Too Full

Going to bed on an empty stomach can keep even the heaviest sleepers from drifting off. Likewise, eating a huge meal can also make falling asleep tricky.

If you are still hungry after dinner, try to have a light snack at least an hour before bed.

8. Don’t Have a Clock Near You

When you wake up in the middle of the night, what do you do? Probably check the clock, or do some mental math to figure out how many more hours you can get.

Eliminating the clock on your nightstand will let you do what you should be doing: sleeping.

9. Don’t Let Your Mind Race

This can be tricky, but try not to bring stress or anxiety to bed. Whatever problems you’re facing can be handled later.

Your priority when you’re in bed should be resting both your body and mind.

10. Exercise

Exercising and staying active will ensure that your body is ready to rest and recharge at night. Be aware of exercising too late, however. This may make it difficult for some people to fall asleep!
