What do you look for when you travel? Is it stunning views, great food or a lively atmosphere? Or maybe it’s a little danger. If you’re fed up of travelling to all the places that everybody recommends, why not try some of the places that they definitely don’t recommend? There are countries in the world that people say you shouldn’t visit because they’re incredibly dangerous, but there are still some amazing things to see there. Obviously, you need to take all the right precautions and go at the right time, but these dangerous countries are still great travel destinations.
Yemen isn’t that well known and it’s not top of the list of popular holiday destinations but the largest city, Sana’a is a beautiful place to visit. It’s a UNESCO world heritage site in the middle of a huge mountain valley. The whole city is filled with spectacular towers decorated with geometric patterns, and there are plenty of beautiful mosques to visit as well. It was once the centre of modern Islam and there is a rich historical heritage to be found there if that interests you. The problem is, there is a lot of unrest in the country and travellers are often at risk of kidnapping. If you stay within the city itself and take precautions, you should be ok, but travelling there is always a big gamble.
Columbia was once associated with the drug trade but since that problem was dealt with, it’s become a popular holiday destination. The capital of Bogata has flourished in the last few decades with loads of great new restaurants and bars popping up in the picturesque old town area of the city. However, a lot of the criminals involved with the drug trade have moved to neighboring Venezuela so areas near the border are quite dangerous. It was also the recent site of a huge landslide and there is a chance it could happen again. On top of that, it’s listed as a hotspot for the Zika virus. If you do travel there, you need to arrange international air evac before you go in case you fall ill or get injured. You should also be careful about where you go and avoid the border with Venezuela.
Myanmar (or Burma) has long been a hotspot for travellers in Asia because of its incredible countryside, amazing Buddhist temples and bustling markets. But in recent years, a lot of people have started to think twice about visiting the country. There is a lot of political upheaval in the country at the moment which makes certain areas very dangerous. Huge amounts of refugees have fled the country recently because of civil unrest but it’s not dangerous all the time. During safer periods, going to Myanmar is fine. The best thing to do is to check the situation and see what advice you can find before you decide whether to go or not. Just remember that the situation could change quite quickly so there’s always the chance that you’ll have to cancel your trip.
These are 3 of the most dangerous countries in the world, but they’ve got so much to offer so it’s worth considering visiting them. Just make sure that you plan accordingly and protect yourself.
