What's the difference between a Cali king mattress and a king mattress

Getting a good night’s sleep means we can wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day. Your mattress plays a vital role in the quality of sleep you get each night, so choosing the perfect model for you is essential. If you share with a partner, or you like to make the most of your space during the night, a large mattress may be the best choice for you, but would you benefit from a Cali king mattress or a king? Read on to find out.

Cali King Vs King: What’s the difference?

There is a very small difference between the California king and a king-sized mattress, so before you make your decision, it is advantageous to know which is which, and how they compare because the difference between these mattresses is as little as 4 inches.

A California king bed is 4 inches longer than your average king-sized bed. It is commonly mistaken as a more luxurious option in contrast, but this isn’t true. It is smaller in surface area than the king-sized mattress, but it offers more room if you’re taller. If you sleep next to a partner, a California king may not be for you, as they are narrower.

A king-sized mattress is the largest standard size on the market – they provide the perfect solution if you’re purchasing a mattress to share with your other half, or if you sleep alone and are most comfortable sprawled across your bed. King mattresses offer a large, comfortable area to rest, but if your room is smaller than 12 feet by 12 feet, you may need to reconsider your choice.

Which to choose?

You must choose the right mattress for you and the space that you have. Because King beds are wider than Cali King beds, you should measure your space accordingly to see which would suit your room best. There are relatively similar in the way of price, but they can be awkward to move as they are heavy. When deciding which is best for you, there are a few more factors that you could think about, for example, your height, how you like to sleep, as well as the size of your space. We’ll look at these considerations in more detail below.

Height

As mentioned previously, if you are over 6ft in height, a Cali king bed could be one of the best options for you. If you’re tall, you will be aware of how annoying it is to have your feet dangling over the end of the bed – it is particularly hard to get comfortable and can lead to broken sleep. A California king bed can stop this from happening, and allow for a more cosy, comfortable night’s rest.

Personal preference

Whether you choose a king-sized bed or a Cali king, it all depends on the way you sleep. If you sleep with a partner, a wider king-sized bed may be the best option, as you will both have enough space to sleep soundly. Similarly, if you like to sprawl over your mattress, or you find yourself migrating into the middle, a King mattress can ensure you have ample room. If you’re tall, a longer king Cali mattress will allow for your extra height and ensure a comfortable night’s sleep.

Room size

Although your preferences are the most important consideration, you should check the size of your room to make sure that your mattress will fit comfortably. As King beds are wide, you’re going to need a room with a width large enough to accommodate them. Because a Cali king is long, you’re going to need to make sure your room is long enough so that it fits perfectly in your space.

Other options

If you’re still not sure which type of mattress would suit you best, there are other options that you could consider, whether you need something smaller in width, or shorter in length. A few of the other sizes of mattresses to choose from include:

  • Queen Sized Mattress – This mattress is suitable for smaller rooms and is great for single sleepers that may feel a king-sized bed is too big, this mattress allows for comfortable sprawling so you can fall into a deep sleep every night. They cost less than a Cali king and a king, however, they may not be suitable for couples that like their space.
  • Split King Mattress – This mattress is a good option if you and your partner can’t agree on the same type of mattress. If you like firm and your partner likes soft, a split king allows you to choose a different option for each side. They do cost slightly more than a king and need specialised bedding.
  • Wyoming King – This mattress is one of a few ‘oversized’ mattress options and could be added to a larger room to allow for couples that co-sleep with children, or just to give each other more space. They tend to be more expensive; they are square-shaped mattress that is typically 84” X 84”.
