Is your jewelry collection in complete disarray? Are you damaging your favorite pieces because of how you store them? Check out these storage tips to keep your jewelry safe, organized, and in good condition.
Whether expensive or not, all types of jewelry need proper storage to stay in good condition for as long as possible. So if you’re spending more time than necessary looking for your pieces every time you have to dress up, or have more than one piece of jewelry damaged because of improper storage, here are some jewelry storage tips that you should know:
- Use proper storage containers
As much as possible, store your pricier pieces in the original box that came from the jeweler. These fabric-lined boxes are meant to protect your jewelry from dust, scratches, and any foreign materials. On the other hand, if you want to store sets together, you can buy jewelry boxes (still with fabric inside) that have compartments for different types of pieces.
It’s also a good idea to buy jewelry organizers for your drawers so you can easily find what you’re looking for by simply opening them. Apart from making jewelry easy to access, storing your pieces in drawers will also help reduce the time spent shuffling through containers to find what you’re looking for.
- Be mindful of the conditions
Don’t store jewelry anywhere near the bathroom or places with extremes of temperature. Make sure your jewelry, especially the more delicate pieces, are stored away from direct sunlight and in an area with low humidity.
- Organize jewelry based on their frequency of use
Separate your jewelry into three categories: frequently used, moderately used, and rarely used. Store your everyday jewelry on top of your dresser or makeup table for easy access. For the somewhat used pieces, store them in your drawers so they won’t accumulate dust. And for the jewels that you rarely use, store them in the bottom-most drawers or your closet for safekeeping.
- Invest in a safe
Consider buying a safe for your finer jewelry, even if you live in a neighborhood with a low crime rate. Having your expensive pieces tucked away in a safe will give you peace of mind, especially if you’re away on vacation.
- Clean jewelry before storing
Make it a habit to clean your exceptional jewelry (the pieces you wear on special occasions) before storing them away again. Doing this will help prevent the buildup of dirt and grease on your pieces, as well as avoid transferring those materials to other jewelry. It is also wise to clean your everyday jewelry after doing activities that likely put some dirt in them, such as swimming or hiking.
- Have a special place for your wedding ring
If you take off your wedding ring at home, place a particular container near the places where you take it off, such as in the bathroom or on your nightstand. Having an actual box for your wedding ring significantly reduces your chances of losing it.
Storing your jewelry improperly and letting them be a tangled up mess is a sure way to damage your pieces prematurely. Thus, if you want to keep your pieces in good condition for a long time, keep these storage tips in mind when reorganizing your jewelry.
