Five benefits of giving up alcohol

When you give up drinking alcohol for even a couple of months this already comes with significant health benefits. So age your wine a little longer in your built in wine cooler for that special occasion!

Giving up alcohol for a while can come with significant health benefits. This is why stop drinking alcohol from your built in wine cooler (translated to Dutch: wijnkast) can make you feel much more healthier and happier.

  1. Lose weight

Alcoholic beverages contain around seven calories per gram, that is almost the same amount as pure fat and twice the amount of calories found in carbohydrates. The calories are ‘empty calories’, they have no nutritional value. Did you know that a pint of lager has the same number of calories as a bag of crisps? When you go on a diet, the first thing you should do is stop drinking, because (almost) instant weight loss is a great benefit when giving up alcohol.

  1. Sleep quality

Drinking alcohol makes you feel sleepy, because it disrupts your REM sleep cycle. This means the quality sleep goes down. An intoxicated person does not sleep as well as a sober person. Even though this does not seems the case at first because it does help you to fall asleep quicker.

  1. Reduce the risk of heart attack

Drinking alcohol raises our blood pressure temporarily as well as for the long term. High blood pressure is one of the main causes of heart disease globally. Don’t think that the antioxidants in a glass of red wine are good for the heart. Quitting alcohol is actually excellent news for your heart.

  1. Better skin

Drinking alcohol can lead to damage to your skin. You look older. Spending the winter in Spain (translated to Dutch: overwinteren in Andalusie) doesn’t help. Your face can become puffy. Many people that go sober report their skin is clearer, brighter, less wrinkled with an overall younger appearance.

  1. Boost your immune system

If you are a frequent drinker you’ll notice that you become susceptible to viruses like flu of the cold more often than people that stay sober. This is because alcohol makes the body more susceptible to infections. Drinking increases people’s risk of injuries, liver disease and some types of cancer. So stop drinking, boost your immune system and buy a fashionable clutch or sport bra (translated to Dutch: sport bh) for the money you save when you stop drinking.
