How to Estimate the Cost of a New Bathroom

Last Updated on July 13, 2019

As a homeowner, you probably know that an updated bathroom will add value to your home. Even if you are not looking to sell, refitting your bathroom will give you a place to unwind at the end of the day.

Of course, you must consider the new bathroom cost before beginning any project. The price of your new bathroom depends on many things.

The complexity of the project

It is estimated that most homeowners spend about £4,500 on a new bathroom. But this number may fluctuate depending on how much work you want to do. For example, if you want to change the entire layout, you are looking at a higher price.

You will most likely need to hire tradesmen to help out, and this will inflate your new bathroom cost. On the other hand, if you just want to update a few fittings, you may spend £2,000 or less. Tackling DIY projects may reduce the overall cost even more.

Plumbing

For larger renovations, a good portion of your money will go towards plumbing. Fitting a new shower, toilet, bath, or sink may require extensive plumbing work. You may find yourself needing to make necessary repairs. If you want to change the layout, you will most likely need to reroute your current pipes to a new location.

Electrical

Many people do not think about electricity when working on the bathroom, but it is another significant new bathroom cost. If you want to upgrade the lighting or add more outlets, you will want to hire a professional. Even adding luxury heated floors requires working with wires. Novices should never try to work with electricity alone.

Bathroom suite

If you want a full upgrade, you will need to remove and replace your existing bath, toilet, and sink. Gutting the bathroom may cost you about £300-£500, depending on the size. You may also need to pay a disposal fee.

Once the old suite is gone, you are ready to install a new one. An installer will charge you depending on the fittings you select and the time needed to complete the job. Budget at least £1000 for a standard suite and more if you want higher end fittings.

Tiling

Tiling requires a lot of expertise. If you want it done right, you should hire a tradesman. The overall cost of wall tile varies greatly depending on the type of tile and how much is needed. You should expect to spend £850-£950 to start.

Flooring

Do not wait until the last minute to figure in the cost of vinyl flooring. On average, replacing the flooring will add between £200 and £500 to your costs. It is often considered an extra, so make sure you get a quote before work begins.
