Are you prepared? What you should do BEFORE you travel

You might have planned your outfits, the items you’re taking in your carry on bag. Your first aid kit is fully stocked, and you’ve packed plenty of suntan lotion. But, there’s got to be more to it, right? Yes! There is! If you’re planning on travelling for several months or even just looking forward to your annual break away from the office – then you’re going to need to be prepared.

Here you’ll get the lowdown on what you need to have done, BEFORE you travel! Good luck!

Your insurance!

You can’t travel these days without some kind of cover. Where travel insurance will cover you if your suitcase is lost or if your flight is delayed, medical travel insurance will help if you fall ill or need emergency medical or dental treatment whilst you’re abroad. You’ll know which is right for you and your travels whether its Extreme Sports Insurance ideas from Safetrip, or something a little more basic to cover you’re sunning yourself on a beach. Getting your travel/medical insurance arranged now, will save you a huge headache in the future.

Check in with your GP

If you’re heading abroad, then it’s a good idea to check in with your GP before you travel. It’s a great opportunity to get a health check and make sure nothing is going to hinder your adventures. If your destination requires you to have vaccinations then you’ll need to get these booked and sorted at least 6-8 weeks so don’t delay. Make sure you have all your prescriptions in order too.

Money

It’s crucial to make sure that your credit card will work at your destination and while you’re at it, get in touch with your bank/credit card provider and let them know to expect transactions appearing from overseas. That way they won’t cancel your cards for fear of suspicious activity.

Don’t always rely on your cards either – make sure you have local cash with you, just in case. When you go to take out cash, use a local bank or an ATM machine – as these will give you the exact currency conversion rate, unlike conversion centres in the airport.

Local research

It always pays to research your destination. Whether that’s the best restaurants and eateries that cater to your dietary requirements and have good reputations for cleanliness, or where the nearest hospital or pharmacy is located. Do you know the emergency number for the country you’re in? Or how to ask for help in the native language? There’s nothing wrong with a good old guidebook – remember you might not always have access to the internet!

It’s also a good idea to find out what events are happening whilst you’re there, so you don’t miss out! You can also try to book tickets to local attractions in advance, so you don’t have to spend your time abroad queuing for hours.

Your documents

Always bring copies of your passport with you, just in case yours goes missing. You could even make an electronic copy and store it in an email document to be extra safe.
