Warning! If you think houseguests are like fish, that is that they start to stink after a few days, then you may not want to read this article. Why? Well, because it’s a guide to making you guestroom so good that you are going to have trouble having a weekend when it’s not in use. Read on to find out more.

The Bed

Now anyone with half a brain knows that the most important item in any bedroom, spare or not, is the bed. If you want folks to be comfortable staying as house guests then you absolutely must get the best bed that you can afford.

Try to put yourselves in their position, would you want to stay a long time in a place where you couldn’t sleep right, or you back was killing you every time you woke up in the morning? Probably not.

That means a medium to firm bed is the best option, in the largest size you can get. Remember if folks are used to superkings at home, sharing a double bed is going to be a bit of a shock!

The Storage

It’s a delicate balance when renovating a guest room. You have to have enough space for the largest and comfiest bed possible, and including enough storage to make your guest feel at home.

At the very least they will need a piece of furniture such as a dresser or closet in which to put their clothes. As this give them a chance to unpack their bags and feel properly settled at yours for the duration of their stay.

Also, resist the temptation to use storage space in your spare room as a dumping ground for items you have no other use for. You guests definitely won’t want to have to fight their way past your own rowing machine, and folders of notes from college if they want to hang up any of their clothes.

The Decor

Now, of course, decor is a matter of personal taste, and that is why you should keep your guest room as neutral as possible. Remember, just because you think it’s the height of fashion, doesn’t mean that all of your friends and family are going to agree.

So take some inspiration from a high-end hotel rooms, and keep things comfortable and luxurious but inoffensive. The very occasional pop of bright color here or there, on a bed runner or a cushion, is OK. But everything else should be mostly white or cream.
