Many people have experienced an unpleasant odor coming from their refrigerator, and it can occur even in the most conscientious hosts. There are several reasons for its appearance, and before getting rid of it, it is necessary to determine the source. It is possible to find the problem and solve it yourself, but there may be cases when you need professional refrigerator repair.

A new refrigerator exudes a chemical smell

In this case, it is enough to simply wash it with detergent and then leave it open for a couple of hours. Don’t forget about the rubber gaskets; they also need to be thoroughly wiped down. Remember to only allow the refrigerator to run when it’s off!

Smells from an old refrigerator

The refrigerator is considered one of the dirtiest places in the apartment, and the epicenter of bacteria and fungus breeding is in the compartment where vegetables are stored, as they are the most perishable product. If there is an odor, check the food stored there. It may not be the food itself, but the traces it has left on the shelves. Throw away anything that has gone bad, defrost the freezer, and clean and ventilate the refrigerator. If the smell doesn’t go away, you need to look for other causes. Drain clogging is common in drip-type refrigerators. The refrigerator produces water that collects in the drain at the back of the refrigerator. If the tube is clogged, moisture accumulates in it, which exudes an unpleasant odor. In appliances of this type, there are storage tanks, which should also be washed periodically so that the accumulated liquid does not fade, becoming a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. Leaking kefir and meat residue serve as a haven for mold, a quickly growing fungus that produces foul odors. Mold also appears in the folds of the gaskets; do not forget to monitor their cleanliness.

What should I use to clean my fridge?

For those who prefer natural remedies, there are several recipes that not only keep the refrigerator clean but also eliminate unpleasant odors.

  1. A solution of lemon juice is the most effective method of combating unpleasant ambergris. Simply dilute the juice with water and wipe surfaces.
  2. Ammonia solution. This is a corrosive agent, work with rubber gloves. Dissolve 1 ml of ammonia in 100 ml of water, wipe the surface with this solution, leave for half an hour, and then rinse with clean water.
  3. A solution of baking soda is good for fighting mold. To prepare it, dissolve 2 tablespoons of baking soda in a liter of water. Do not forget the rubber seals.
