The average person will move 11-12 times through the course of their life. That’s a lot of moving into homes!

Now, as exciting as it is to search for homes for families, choose the right one for you, and make it your own, there’s no question that moving can also be an incredibly stressful, exhausting experience.

That said, if you know some of the most common mistakes made during a move, you’ll be better equipped to avoid them. To complete the most stress-free move of your life, just keep reading.

1. Not Making a Plan

The key to a smooth, successful move is planning. In fact, when it comes to moving, there’s no such thing as over-planning. Before you pack, have a system for your boxes, whether that be to label them with a marker or with color-coded packing tape.

Next, have a moving plan. Will you be moving on your own, with the help of friends and family, or hiring local experts to handle the job for you?

If at all possible, it’s a good idea to get a blueprint of your new home as well. In doing so, you’ll be able to see the exact space in rooms and decide where to put furniture before you ever step foot through the door.

2. Planning to Unpack in One Day

When you’re designing your moving plan, do not plan to unpack in one day. This is a huge task, even if you’re moving to a studio apartment.

It’s easy to get excited or frustrated and rush through the process, but do your best to take your time. This will minimize the likelihood of mistakes along the way and allow you to enjoy unpacking more.

Unpack one box at a time. Empty the box, put the items away, break the box down, and sort the trash. Go through this process box by box, room by room, and unpacking will be a breeze.

Not to mention, you won’t have a disaster zone to contend with once you’re done!

3. Not Packing an Essentials Box

As we’ve already discussed, unpacking should take you a few days to accomplish. Because of this, it’s important to have an essentials box that’s kept separate from the other boxes for personal items.

This box should contain a few changes of clothes, toiletries, toilet paper, and a few pieces of dish and silverware. Anything else that you need on a day-to-day basis, such as medications, should be kept in an easy-to-access place as well. Don’t allow your essentials to become lost in the sea of boxes!
