Hot weather can pose a number of health problems. For one thing, it can cause dehydration. Not only that, but it can lead to heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

The good news is that there are several ways to cool ourselves—air conditioning being one of them. In fact, nearly three-quarters of all homes have AC units.

That’s not the only solution, though. As it turns out, there are several other things that you can do to keep yourself cool during the summer.

Interested in knowing what they are? Keep reading for some tips on how to make your house cooler without the AC!

Use a Dehumidifier

You can always use a dehumidifier if your AC is broken and you’re waiting for an AC repair technician to arrive.

Basically, the machine will suck the moisture out of the air—that way, you’ll be much more comfortable. After all, moist heat tends to be much more uncomfortable than dry heat.

Ideally, you want the humidity level to be around 60 percent.

Avoid Using Large Appliances

Avoid using the oven or stove during the day. Why? They tend to give off significant amounts of heat. The same thing goes for other large appliances such as dishwashers and dryers.

If you must use them, wait until the evening hours—that way, at least it won’t be as hot outside.

Use Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans are great during the summer. Keep in mind, however, that there is a right way to use them.

That is, you want to make sure that they’re rotating counterclockwise—that way, it’ll push cooler air down. In doing so, the house will feel cooler than it is.

Close the Blinds and Curtains

Keep the curtains and blinds closed during the day—that’ll prevent unwanted heat from coming into the house.

This is especially true for south and west-facing windows. Depending on the type of blinds or curtains that you have, it can easily cool your house by several degrees.

Pro-tip: Light-colored curtains are a good choice as they reflect sunlight.

Use Window Films

Window films can block up to 80% of the sun’s heat and glare. In other words, your house will be cooler.

How do they work? As solar radiation strikes the glass, the film will block the UV rays from entering. In addition to that, it’ll reduce the amount of light and heat that’s able to pass through the glass.
