AC Not Working: 5 Common Summer Air Conditioner Issues

Is your AC not working? With temperatures climbing, the heat is more than just an inconvenience. It’s a danger, too.

Overheating can lead to scary health conditions like painful headaches, dehydration, and even fainting!

Before it comes to that, read up on the most common air conditioner issues. Here are five of the most common reasons why your AC unit isn’t working.

1. AC Unit Blows Hot Air

Is there anything worse than coming inside after a day in the warm sun to find out that your AC unit isn’t working?

What about finding out that it’s blowing hot air instead?

Yikes.

In most cases, this means that there’s a problem with your unit’s compressor. This can be an expensive fix, but the longer you put it off, the more uncomfortable your home will be.

However, it could also be something as simple as a coolant issue. Check your unit’s refrigerant levels and see if it needs topping off.

2. Air Smells Musty When the AC Is On

A musty smell tends to go hand-in-hand with your unit blowing little to no cool air.

Most of the time, this is an easy fix as you may only need to replace your air filter.

Filters need changing every few months. If you have pets or live in a dry, dusty area, you may need to change your filter more often.

Pull out your unit’s air filter and check for dirt and debris. If it’s completely covered, you’ve found your culprit.

3. Inconsistent Temperatures

Maybe you’re lucky enough to feel the sweet, sweet relief of cool air…but only for a little while. Or maybe your AC unit only blows cool air in certain parts of your house and not others.

Typically, this is caused by a leaking hose. Refrigerant pours out of the leak and can’t enter your home.

Aside from being frustrating, leaks are also a colossal waste of money, as you’ll need to top off the unit’s refrigerant more often.

4. Strange Sounds Come from the AC Unit

Buzzing, hissing, or clanking noises can be quite startling. Each noise points to a different issue.

If you hear clanking or banging, for example, it often means there’s a piece lose in the unit.

Buzzing, on the other hand, points to electrical issues.

5. The Unit Doesn’t Cool at All

So what happens if you aren’t receiving any cool air at all?

Well, that’s more open-ended.

It could be anything from electric problems to a dead fan or faulty condenser. These aren’t simple repairs you can make yourself. In either case, you’ll need to get some help from your local AC Repair company.

It might cost a pretty penny now, but trust us, it’s worth it to stay comfortable this summer.
