1. Check other resumes
Resume creation always starts by checking other CVs from your industry. You can find lots of examples online so this should definitely be your starting point. If you’re really careful, you can notice some patterns, the most favorable template being used, the format of resumes and other small details that will assist you in creating your own CV.
2. Keep it short
Despite your natural urge to look good, you need to keep resume short. Try to avoid putting information that is not relevant for a current position. By having too many stuff in your resume, you’re just averting attention from things that actually matter. Instead, focus on things that will impress the recruiter. You might also want to avoid mentioning jobs where you had a conflict with the employer.
3. Simplify the contact information section
Every resume starts with basic contact information but unfortunately, some people tend to overextend this section. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is mentioning your personal information such as your army service, marital status, age and so on. Just use your name, last name, email address, and the phone will suffice.
4. Finding the right template
Depending on who you ask and in which country you live, people will tell you that this or that resume is ideal. Unfortunately, it is really hard to say. Oftentimes it comes down to recruiters’ personal preferences. No matter what, use a template that is simple, readable and that will help recruiter go through your personal information quickly.
5. Use the right font
The same thing that has been said about template goes for the font. It is more likely to present a distraction than a benefit. So, make sure to use some official, simple fonts that will make the resume more readable.
6. Put the latest job/education first
As you have noticed by now, relevancy is very important when it comes to resumes. This is also the case when it comes to dates. When mentioning jobs and education, make sure to put the latest position first. This also helps as your last position is probably the best in terms of how many responsibilities you had and the quality of a company.
7. Add references
One of the biggest issues for employers is the lack of trust. They want to find people who are most likely to stay with the company and who can provide value. So, they will want to check your references and what your previous boss has to say about you. References can be an awesome tool in getting the next job. Needless to say, make sure to put a person who had good cooperation with you.
8. Create a resume with software in mind
Big companies use automated software to rank resumes from best to worst. There are lots of things that the software is considering; one of the most important ones is the use of particular phrases. For example, if you’re applying for a doctor’s position and there is no mention of a word “doctor” or “medicine” in your resume, this is a clear red flag.
9. Add social profiles
Although I mentioned that you can just put a few basic information in the contact section, you might also consider adding URLs of your social profiles. Nowadays, recruiters tend to check social profiles before giving a person a job. This provides them with some additional info beforehand. However, if your profiles look unprofessional or too silly, this might work as a detriment. So, you need to be very careful in terms of what you’re sharing.
10. Expand on responsibilities
One thing that people often neglect is the fact they need to add responsibilities and accomplishments for every job they’ve had. Instead, they will simply put the job they’ve had and how long they worked for a particular company. This is a mistake. Employers want to know what you did, what you learned and how you improved during a previous job as they would also want to have a person that is able to improve itself.
