On May 19, 1949, Hill was born in a Christian religious household as Joseph Michael Hill in Dallas, Texas. He was the son of Ernest and Myrl Hill. The musician was of American nationality and American-white ethnicity. He and his elder brother Rocky, who is also a musician, grew up in the East Dallas neighborhood of Lakewood.

Later Dusty and Frank went to Houston in 1968, and in 1969, Beard joined Billy Gibbons’ band The Moving Sidewalks. Then Bill brought Dusty to Frank, and the band was renamed ZZ Top in July 1969. They went on to record albums including the chart-topping Eliminator (1983).  Hill and ZZ Top were elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. After a period of worsening health, Hill died in 2021.
