A broken key can also be called a snap-off or broken blade key since they usually have a sharp piece snapped off at one end of the blade. It can be frustrating not to be able to get it out. In some cases, the key may even require specialized tools.

Techniques For Removing Broken Keys From Locks

Use A Flathead Screwdriver

Use a flathead screwdriver to pry out the broken piece of the key gently. Start by placing the flathead screwdriver at the base of the key, with one side against the lock’s side and the other against the broken piece. Tap gently with a hammer and pull out with pliers.

Use An Awl Or Drill Bit

If a part of your key is still uncracked, you could use an awl or drill bit to get it out. Use strong force to break through whatever is left of your key, and then use an awl or drill bit to pry it out. It’s a dangerous method, so do it only if you know what you’re doing.

Use A Sawing Tool

If none of the above methods work, then it’s time to call in the professionals. Special tools can be used to see through the lock and get a broken key out of lock without damaging itself. You can also use a cylinder key screener explicitly made for this purpose. Your best bet is to look for products with lock pick tools built into them.

Use Pliers

There are also several pliers that you can use to get a broken key out of lock, including channel lock pliers. These are typically very strong; if you are lucky, they’ll grab the key and pull it out without breaking the rest of the pliers. Using these pliers to tighten a lock is also possible so that the key fits inside it. It’s an excellent way to lock in a new key, even if the wave doesn’t have a matching keyhole.

Use A Metal File

If none of the above techniques work, and you’re left with a broken lock, you can use a metal or flat file to remove the key from the lock shaft. Just put your file against the back side of one side of your key, then gently twist and pull until it comes out. It may take some good twisting to get it out.

Use A Pinch Bar

Another way to remove broken keys is with a pinch or fixing bar. These are usually used on doors by locksmiths, and they allow you to strip flathead screws or other small parts right out of the door without going through the entire mechanism. If there’s enough force in the outside walls of your lock, you could also use a pin bar, another tool locksmith uses indoors.

There are many ways to get a broken key out of a lock. Always use your best judgment and ensure you know what you’re doing before attempting these methods yourself. Call the professionals if you need help getting a broken key out of a lock as the key won’t come out of lock on its own. There’ s no reason to risk damaging your door or any other property for you to get your missing keys back.
