If you’re looking to reel in a big fish on your next sport fishing trip, you’ll want to know what types of fish you can catch.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the different types of fish that you might encounter while out on a trip with them.

Bluefin tuna

Bluefin are the largest tunas and can live up to 40 years. They migrate across all oceans and can dive deeper than 3,000 feet. Bluefin tuna are made for speed: built like torpedoes, have retractable fins and their eyes are set flush to their body. They are tremendous predators from the moment they hatch, seeking out schools of fish like herring, mackerel, and even eels.

Barracuda

This long, tubular fish has a very pointed snout filled with two rows of teeth, and small fins set back towards its crescent caudal (tail) fin. It is a shiny blue-gray above, fading to silver and white below, usually with dark spots on its lower sides, and sometimes with faint darker bars on its upper side. This is a successful daytime ambush hunter that can burst in speeds up to 35 mph, and is a danger to humans because it will mistakenly attack shiny objects or fish caught on spears. It can grow to over 5 feet long and over 100 pounds.

Yellowtail Snapper

This common snapper prefers schooling in small groups in and around reefs in the Western Atlantic. It has a distinct yellow lateral line that starts off narrow near the eye and widens as it reaches the forked, yellow caudal fin. It has blueish or olive sides with yellow spots above the line, and pale white below. These snappers grow to about 30 inches and are a popular food fish, as well as an attraction to divers and in public aquariums.
