Alta Moda's 10th Anniversary Celebrates Its Unique Focus

Haute couture fashion designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana recently wrapped up the 10th anniversary of Alta Moda, an event that celebrates the super-wealthy and highly stylish.

This annual tradition isn’t so much about clothing but rather heirlooms that bring value for generations to come. Dolce & Gabbana has always focused on designs that are more artwork than mere fashion. Here’s what sets this event apart from other fashion shows.

What Alta Moda Focuses On

Most fashion shows focus on buyers and editors, but Alta Moda is a style of life. The event is centered around the extremely wealthy with more of a dramatic theme than a mere runway. In 2019, the designers focused on the Alessandro Manzoni novel The Betrothed. Recently, they reenacted the 19th-century opera Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni.

The Locations The Designers Choose

Last year it was Venice, citing it as a harmony of opposites. It featured contrasts of golden and dark as well as joy and sorrow.

This year, the designers held their celebration in Sicily, celebrating Sicilian women. Models dressed in black with matching veils in addition to gracing the runway in more colorful designs. Sicily was also the site of their 2019 celebration where Dolce & Gabbana honored the Greek gods. That year, they dressed models in beautiful gold garments. Other gorgeous locations where they’ve held the event include:

Lake Como in 2018

The 2018 event was held near Lombardy, Italy. The picturesque lake was the setting for flouncing skirts and a sea of colorful flowers. Models wore rhinestone-studded crowns and carried rich-looking parasols.

Palermo, Sicily in 2017

Sicily is where both designers were born. It’s a frequent location for Alta Moda, and the designers dressed models in printed ballgowns and intricate headpieces. Some of the gowns were covered with sparkling sequins and religious icons.

Naples in 2016

In 2016, the designers paid tribute to Sophia Loren and the opera in Naples. Rose and other large flower prints and plenty of gold bedecked the runway models at this event.

Portofino in 2015

Castello Brown, a sixteenth-century hilltop fortress was the location of the Alta Moda fall and winter event. The show was illuminated by moonlight, and attendees could hear the nearby sea. The models dressed in faux fur and feathers. Metallic gold and silver fabrics glowed.

Capri in 2014

The designers held the Alta Moda Fall 2014 event at a gorgeous spot by the sea in Capri. The crowns were spectacular and loaded with colorful jewels and models wore gowns with giant striped skirts that floated along the ground.

The Stars Who Attend

Alta Moda is always a star-studded event, and this year’s event was no different. Pop diva Mariah appeared in the company of the designers themselves. Helen Mirren wore a colorful and silky evening gown while Sharon Stone wore a teal pants with an accompanying train and a sparkling gold bustier.

Alta Moda has never been a mere fashion show, but rather a dramatic celebration. Expect more opulence and entertainment for years to come.
