If you’re thinking about living in your very own lake house, you have to admit, there’s really nothing quite like it. Such a life has many great benefits. Do you want to take a swim whenever your heart desires? Or are you keen on frequent fishing trips without traveling anywhere else? All of that is an option for waterfront property owners. But just like any other location in the world, you’ll find that such a life also carries a couple of drawbacks, albeit tiny ones.

For example – if you decide to sell your place in the city and move near a freshwater lake, you’ll quickly realize something. You need to find a way to deal with bugs and insects as quickly as possible. And whether we’re talking about pesky mosquitoes or pretty much harmless mayflies, all of them can still present a nuisance. Don’t worry, though. We’re here with some handy tips on dealing with all of them! If you follow our advice, absolutely nothing will take away from your lake living, which is truly an amazing experience.

Dealing With Mosquitoes

Once you decide to become a waterfront property owner and move near a lake, there are plenty of things that can make your long distance relocation simple. But once you arrive, let’s face it; mosquitoes will be one of the most annoying things you can ever encounter. As anyone who’s had the misfortune of dealing with them will tell you, they’re extremely irritating bugs. And even if you don’t live in an area where they’re an endemic problem, chances are you’ve gotten bit by them at least a couple of times in your life.

But why do mosquitoes appear? Well, they thrive and breed in areas that contain a few crucial factors. Namely, a lot of humidity, heat, and a body of standing water. In these conditions, mosquitoes tend to breed at an annoyingly quick pace. And once the days start getting warmer, you’ll definitely have your share of bites from mosquitoes if you’re living near a lake, which fulfills all of the abovementioned conditions. Luckily, we’ve got a couple of tips on dealing with these nuisances.

Ceiling Fans

Before you go out looking for the best mosquito repellents, make sure you install as many ceiling fans in your lake home as you can. Why? Well, mosquitoes simply hate breezy areas. So, doing this will have a double benefit; not only will you repel a lot of the mosquitoes in your home, but you’ll also be more comfortable and cool around the house. And if you tend to spend time on your deck or porch outside the house during the summer, think about putting in a couple of ceiling fans out there too.

Installing Screens

Once summer rolls around, we all enjoy leaving our windows and doors open if a day is particularly warm. That way, fresh air is allowed to circulate through your home, and you can bear the heat more easily. But consequentially, you’re basically giving the mosquitoes an open invitation. So, install screens on your doors and windows. That way, you’ll keep away not only the mosquitoes, but also deal with bugs and insects of other varieties. If you haven’t screened your porch, you might want to do that as well.

Citronella Plants

If you want to deal with bugs and insects in your lake home, you may start thinking about all the repairs to your waterfront home that you can make. But did you know that there are some aesthetic additions you can put in as well, while simultaneously repelling mosquitoes? For example, you can add a couple of citronella plants to your garden.

As you’ll be delighted to discover, pesky mosquitoes just can’t stand the sight of citronella. Also, you can light some citronella candles to keep them at bay or apply citronella oil to your skin to avoid painful bites and blisters. But still, the most permanent solution is planting a couple of citronella plants around the house. Putting some potted ones on your porch is also a great idea.

Battling Mayflies

Sure, mayflies are definitely a much smaller annoyance than the horrible mosquitoes, just by virtue of the fact that they never bite. But that still doesn’t necessarily mean that these bugs aren’t annoying. After all, while you’re enjoying the outdoors of your lake home, the last thing you want is a big cloud of mayflies swirling around your head.

So, if you want to keep them away, as funny as it may seem, check the lights around the house. You’ll find that lights of specific colors attract mayflies more than others. If you put in lightbulbs that radiate a yellow color, you’ll deal with bugs and insects like mayflies more easily. Also, make sure you turn off any outdoor lights when you decide to call it a night and go to sleep. If you’ve got a preference for lights for safety and security reasons, think about putting in lights with motion detectors. These will turn on only if they detect a human-sized motion in the yard.

Additionally, we recommend doing your best to keep your yard as clean as possible. Don’t let the grass grow too high, and trim it regularly. Also, make sure there’s no dead organic matter just lying around, like branches or leaves, as these are a constant attraction for mayflies.

Conclusion

As you can see, if you want to deal with bugs and insects as a waterfront property owner, you may have your work cut out for you. Mainly though, such an effort will definitely lead you to maintain your household well, which is always a good thing. And sure, there may be a bit of fixing up around the house to do, as well as light landscaping, but at the end of the day, it’ll definitely be worth it. Just imagine the pleasure of enjoying an insect-free lakehouse!
