Having a baby should never be taken lightly. Once you have a child, your life will be changed forever. You will need to put your child’s needs ahead of your own and ensure that your child always feels safe. Being a parent is a 24/7 job and you rarely get a break.

There are lots of wonderful things about having a baby, but it’s important to know the more serious stuff before you dive into parenthood. Here are 5 things to know before having a baby.

Risks

Before you have a baby, it’s important to know the potential risks involved. There is a very small risk of death during childbirth. You could also feel very unwell during pregnancy. And then there are risks for the child. Your child could be born with a disability or illness which could significantly impact their life, such as Chorioamnionitis – an infection of the amniotic fluid and placenta. If this is the case, you will need to provide additional support throughout your child’s life. You may also wish to call an Infant Chorioamnionitis lawyer. It’s important to be aware of the risks before you decide to have a child. Will you be able to support and care for a child with additional needs?

Maternity leave

Before you have a baby, it’s important to check the maternity leave policy at your work. While all companies legally must allow women to take maternity leave, some places will vary. Plus, you’ll want to know what you’re entitled to. So, check it out in advance to know your rights.

Financial pressures

While you’re thinking about maternity leave, it’s important to think about the costs of having a child. While you don’t need to be rich to have a baby, you do need to be financially secure. A child needs a safe home with a roof over their head and food on the table. When they’re young you’ll need to buy nappies, formula and toys. As they grow up you’ll need to pay for medical bills, buy school supplies and clothes. Are you in a financially secure enough place to pay for another human?

Care

Caring for a baby is no laughing matter. Before deciding to have a child, you’ll need to have a basic understanding of what to do. Sure, you’ll learn as you go, but there are certain things you’ll need to know. So, do your research. Read the parenting books. Go to parenting classes. Ask your parents. Having a baby isn’t simply “having a baby”. It’s knowing how to care, educate and discipline. It’s constantly learning and being challenged. It will be hard, but if you do your research and never stop trying, you’ll be just fine.
