So, you’ve decided to host a costume party? The next step is to decide on a theme. Thankfully, you must love the idea of fancy dress, after all, you’d be mad to host a costume party if you didn’t. But how do you come up with a theme that’s fun, easy to follow, and looks great on the night?
The most important word to remember is fun. You want to have fun planning the party, you want your guests to have fun planning their outfits, and you want everyone to have fun at the actual event. Now, there’s the classics like The Great Gatsby, your favourite era, or superheroes, but we’ve put together a list of a few theme ideas which fall a little outside the box.
What I want to be when I grow up
As a child, most of us have an idea of what we want to be. Whether that’s a fireman, superhero, inventor, or actor. So why not challenge your guests to go back to their 7-year-old self and ask them what they want to be when they grow up. Then they can make their 7-year-old dreams come true. And to really take them back, you can theme the food just like a kids party back in the day, complete with fairy bread, chips, and lots of sweet treats.
My future self
Do you ever wonder where you’ll be in twenty years’ time? Well now you’ll have the chance to tell everyone your aspirations. Will you be a property mogul sunning yourself on a private island, a police officer maintaining order on the streets, or are you planning to run away and join the circus? It’s completely make believe which gives you complete creative license to have fun with it.
Now, we don’t know about you but the idea of it being totally acceptable to stay in our pyjamas is definitely tempting. You could literally just jump straight into bed after all that dancing. So why not throw a slumber party? Complete with pillow, popcorn, and gossip.
Mad scientist party
This is a great theme because it allows you to have a lot of fun with everything from serving cocktails in test tubes to fake smoke and mad hair.
Pick a letter, any letter, and tell your guests to come as something beginning with it i.e. your name begins with ‘M”, so you ask everyone to come as something beginning with ‘M’. It’s most entertaining to try and figure out what everyone is when they walk in, and you’ll have a fantastically eclectic costume party.
Superheroes gone wrong
So, this is the standard superhero costume theme with a slight twist. Perhaps Wonder Woman put her outfit on inside out, Superman and Batman accidentally swapped capes, or Spiderman forgot his mask. Even superheroes can’t be perfect all the time, so have a laugh and try to figure out how their outfit might go wrong.
