If you’re like the majority of people in America, your schedule is hectic. From the moment you wake up in the morning to the second you lay your head down at night, you’re being pulled in a million different directions.

And with such a busy day to day life, it can be difficult to carve out time for yourself. But daily self-care is important for both your mental and physical health!

One of the best ways to ensure that you give yourself time for self-care is through a morning beauty routine. It might seem insignificant, but something as simple as learning how to wear perfume and treating yourself to a signature scent can do wonders for your stress levels and self-confidence.

It’s for this very reason that we’ve put together a helpful guide to teach you how to use perfume! Keep reading to learn everything you need to know.

How to Choose Your Scent

There are virtually endless varieties of perfume scents available on the market. And not just fragrances, but levels of concentrations! To find your signature scent, you need to know how to navigate the different types and tones.

Level of Concentration

Let’s start with concentration. When you envision yourself wearing your new perfume, how strong is the scent? Is it a subtle hint or something that will linger after you’ve left the room?

When it comes to concentration, there are four levels. The strongest scents are perfumes or parfums. The next strongest is eau de parfum, then eau de toilette, and finally, eau de cologne.

Fragrance Families

Once you have an idea of how strong you want your perfume to be, you can move on to fragrance families. Like concentration levels, there are four groups of fragrances. These are floral, warm and spicy, fresh, and woody and earthy.

Don’t feel restricted to one family! Different scents work better for different occasions, not to mention you can always layer scents to create something unique.

If you’re shopping for perfume in-store (which we recommend for first-time buyers), don’t fixate too much on ingredients. Knowing which fragrance family you’re looking for is a good place to start, but all you really need to think about when shopping is whether you enjoy the scent or not.

Consider Your Other Beauty Products

When choosing a perfume, you need to consider any other beauty products you already use. If you use a scented deodorant or shampoo, you’ll want to pick a fragrance that compliments it.

However, when you’re shopping for fragrances, try to wear something unscented. You won’t be able to smell the perfume as well if you’re smelling your moisturizer at the same time.

More Expensive Doesn’t Always Mean Better

Having a budget when you shop is important, but when it comes to perfume, price matters less than what you like. Just because a scent costs hundreds of dollars doesn’t mean that you’re going to like it. If you fall in love with a low-cost fragrance, buy it!

Don’t overlook deals such as sales or wholesale fragrances. You never know, you might find your new signature scent for a steal!

How to Wear Perfume

Once you have your new perfume, you need to apply it correctly. Believe it or not, knowing how to use perfume is an art! Don’t worry, if you’re already feeling lost, we’ve got you covered.

Apply Perfume to Your Skin

When applying your perfume, be sure that spray or dab it directly onto your skin. Your skin contains oils that act as the perfect binding agent for fragrance. In addition, your body heat will allow the scent to fully express itself.

There are certain places on your body that will make your perfume pop more than others. Apply your perfume on the warmest parts of your body, such as your elbows, chest, neck, and the backs of your knees. These are called pulse points and will act as a natural diffuser for your chosen scent.

Be careful not to rub your perfume into your skin. To avoid destroying the top notes of the fragrance, allow it to sit on your skin and mix with your natural scent. Rubbing it in dries out a lot of the scent.

Other Ways to Use Perfume

Applying perfume straight to your skin is effective, but there are other ways to use perfume as well!

You can walk through a fragrance cloud, for example. Spray your perfume into the air and walk through it before you put on clothes. Because you’ll likely be inhaling it this way, you’ll want to use a nontoxic, biodegradable fragrance.

Misting your clothing is another option, but the type of fabric is important. When it doubt, if you can wash it, you can spray it. However, misting delicate fabrics such as silk can stain the material.

Don’t spray perfume directly onto your clothing, either. Instead, create a perfume cloud and wave the clothing in it.

You can also apply perfume to your hair, but there’s a caveat. Avoid spraying perfume that contains alcohol into your hair. Stick to water-based perfumes for hair to ensure that you don’t dry out or damage your locks.

Wear Perfume to Improve Your Confidence

Putting on perfume might seem like an unnecessary part of a morning routine, but it can actually improve your confidence! This is because taking a few extra minutes for self-care will tell your subconscious that you’re worth the love and attention.

Learning how to wear perfume, including picking the right scent for you and applying it correctly, might be all you need to give yourself a confidence boost and tackle the day like a boss.
