1. Ambergris Caye, Belize

The largest barrier reef is located outside of Australia, but Belize has the second largest great barrier reef, making it the perfect destination for the best snorkeling.

If you want to get up close with rays, eels, and brightly colored tropical fish, this is your chance.

There are lots of caves at this location, and they all have beautiful, colorful coral in the turquoise waters.

2. Great Barrier Reef, Australia

The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is probably one of the most popular snorkeling destinations, and we had to include it on our list.

There are all kinds of marine life and beautiful coral to see here. This is the largest reef system on the planet, and there are over 2,900 individual reefs that stretch for over 1,400 miles of shoreline.

There are over a thousand different fish species and six different sea turtle species that call these waters home.

However, you should make sure that you visit the reef now. Scientists predict that the reef could be extinct as early as 2050.

3. Blue Bay Marine Park, Mauritius

If this is one of your first times snorkeling, you may want to check out Mauritius. This is an independent island east of Madagascar, located in the Indian Ocean.

Blue Bay Marine Park has incredible visibility that makes it easy for beginners. You can head right from the beach into your snorkeling adventure, so you don’t have to worry about renting a boat.

You can see parrotfish, clownfish, angelfish, and damselfish as well as other exotic fish.

4. The Big Island, Hawaii

Hawaii also offers some beautiful snorkeling areas.

The entire archipelago has beautiful spots, but the Big Island has some of the best.

Kealakekua Bay has an underwater state park that has eye-popping coral and colorful fish. If you’re a history buff, there’s a little bit for you to experience there as well. This is actually where Captain James Cook landed when he came to this island.

You can also see turtles and dolphins when you head to the water near Captain Cook Monument.

5. Bermuda

For some of the most interesting snorkeling, you should head to Bermuda.

The western beaches in Bermuda feature the Western Blue Cut, which has three different shipwrecks underneath it.

It’s very easy to swim to all three of these, and they aren’t very far apart. Groups of grouper swim around these shipwrecks, making it a beautiful site to see.

If you decide to visit in the winter, however, make sure that you wear a wet suit.

6. The Maldives

There are over 1,000 islands of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean, and there’s a chain of 26 atolls.

This is the most geographically dispersed country, which means that there is plenty of opportunity for exploring underwater.

7. Palawan, the Philippines

If you want to see some beautiful coral islands, you can dive into the water right outside of Noa Noa Island.

8. Komodo National Park, Indonesia

Komodo National Park is located outside of Indonesia’s Lesser-Sunda island. This is a chain of volcanic islands. The Komodo National Park was established in 1980 to help preserve the Komodo Dragon.

This site is a UNESCO World Heritage site now, making it a really special place to snorkel.

The park is something you should visit, but the waters surrounding the park also have a lot of life to enjoy. The reefs have been under a protected status, which means that they are thriving and have all kinds of sea life in them.

9. Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique

The Bazaruto Archipelago of Mozambique is a site that you will find yourself coming back to over and over.

It’s about 20 miles off the east coast of Africa, and there’s a group of about six islands.

The entire area was made into a National Park in 1971, which means that the underwater life is thriving.

10. Devil’s Crown, Galapagos

Devil’s Crown is actually a sunken and extinct volcano that is near Floreana Island.

Snorkelers and scuba divers come from all over the world to see the reef sharks, colorful fish, and eagle rays here.
