The Road to Hana

Are you planning a trip to Hawaii and wondering if driving the Road to Hana is worth the time and trouble? If so, there are a few things you should know about what to expect before determining if the drive is right for you.

Keep reading to learn about you may or may not want to take the Road to Hana.

Breathtaking Scenery

The scenery along the way to Hana is absolutely beautiful and it really shouldn’t be missed. You will be surrounded by stunning waterfalls, lush rainforest, and scenic vistas. For many people when they picture Hawaii, this is the type of scenery they imagine.

If you love taking photographs then this drive will offer you plenty of opportunities. There are tons of waterfalls and many bridges for you to capture. If you have a fancy camera or even just the camera on your phone, you are guaranteed to get some amazing shots.

Taking the Road to Hana is also the only way for you to see Oheo Gulch or some of the more remote locations in Maui.

Enjoy the Drive

The Road to Hana is the perfect trip for anyone who doesn’t mind taking their time and enjoy the scenery. There are many places to stop along the way and take a hike or enjoy a picnic lunch. However, if you are on a limited timeline you might want to skip it for another time.

There is so much to see along the highway you won’t want to feel like you are rushed to make the long drive in one day. Driving at night is not an option due to the number of turns and winds on the drive.

Keep in mind you will have to drive the highway twice. Most car rental companies will not allow you to take the southeast drive due to rock slides closing the roads often. Be prepared for the trip to turn into a 10 to 12-hour drive.

Motion Sickness Sufferers Beware

If you are prone to getting motion sickness, especially while driving, this trip might not be for you. The road can be incredibly windy, forcing your vehicle to move more on the road, and there are many hairpin turns.

Traffic can also get pretty backed up since many people will be navigating the road. If you do plan to drive then you should be on the road no later than 7:00 a.m. to avoid some of the traffic. This isn’t great if you are already feeling nauseous from the motion and just want to get out of the car.

Remember that you will have frequent stops to get out and do some exploring, but you might also be stuck in traffic depending on when you leave and the day.
