What are Damon Braces?

Damon braces are a dental appliance used in orthodontic treatments for creating a perfect smile and improving oral health.

Smile reconstruction doesn’t always consider putting on veneers and teeth whitening, sometimes there is more to it. Preparation for those procedures usually involves more time and effort than they do, because it takes more time to deal with teeth misalignment or other disfigurements.

Teeth misalignment should be dealt with prior to any aesthetic work. Situations like crooked or badly positioned teeth, crowded or widely spread teeth, require the intervention of an expert in orthodontics.

Orthodontics is a very complex area of expertise in dentistry because it deals not only with aesthetics of the oral system but with functionality as well. The two major factors that can improve a person’s health and confidence at the same time.

Orthodontic therapy can be performed with multiple types of appliances, especially with kids. But, when treating patients over 16 years of age, it usually ends up with braces. Nowadays many adults are having braces just for cosmetics reasons. Age doesn’t matter when striving for a perfect and healthy smile.

There are several types of braces, various materials, colors, different placement inside the mouth, but all for the same goal – rearranging teeth for functional and aesthetic purposes.

When talking about braces, the first thing that comes to mind is traditional metal ones. They have been the industry’s standard for many years. Although far away from invisible they are proven to be very effective and very affordable.

When talking about which materials are used, other than metal, there are ceramic and even gold braces.

Regarding placement, braces can be positioned on the outer or inner side of teeth array.

Whichever type of braces patient ends up with, it takes time to adapt. Tongue and cheeks need some time to get used to, the first couple of weeks they usually get sore from friction and scratching.

Oral hygiene is very important when having braces on. A dental appliance such as braces consists of many parts, thus making food easier to stick and harder to clean. For the benefit of oral health and treatment as well, keeping teeth clean is a must. Bad hygiene might lead to decay, cavities and gum diseases thus prolonging the treatment time. Having braces means that you have to pay attention to diet, carry toothbrush along with you, clean after every meal and use of some extra tools, like an interdental toothbrush.

Orthodontic therapy treatment doesn’t imply that it has to be noticeable, but it usually is. Traditional metal braces are clearly visible, ceramic ones a little less, while lingual and Invisalign are almost invisible. The subset of traditional ones are Damon braces, almost the same visual identity but with little smaller brackets.

Ceramics braces have brackets that are made from ceramics, as the name says, which come in different colors, trying to match patient’s teeth as much as possible. Lingual braces are positioned on the inside of teeth array, thus being barely visible. Invisalign is a product of totally different technology, in essence, it is a transparent custom-made set of aligners that reposition teeth just as braces do.

What kind of braces the patient will end up with depends on various circumstances. For example complexity of therapy, type of braces that are going to be used, their components, etc. Not only that, the duration and number of visits required, previous work, the status of dental clinic and orthodontist’s qualification can have some impact too.

Patients that are not concerned with visibility are usually interested in technical features that proposed braces provide. While at the same time, patients who find aesthetic an imperative are offered various solutions, each of them coming with a price to choose from.

Financial aspect should never be ignored, but there is no simple answer for them since there are a lot of factors involved in the whole process. Metal braces are cheapest ones, while other costs a bit more depending on a type and materials used. The best thing to do is to schedule an appointment with Dr. Kalpesh Bohara and discuss the overall cost for your individual case.

Damon braces, or self-ligating braces, are upgraded version of traditional metal braces.

Braces usually consist of brackets, ligatures, and archwire.

Brackets are square shaped parts that are firmly cemented onto teeth’s surface and designed to receive and transfer teeth-shifting forces from the archwire to the teeth.

The archwire is a metal wire that passes through the brackets, which produces force, held by ligatures, oval-shaped elastic bands.

The difference between traditional braces and Damon braces is that Damon braces don’t have ligatures. They are equipped with a special type of brackets that are capable of holding archwire without any assistance of ligature bands.

Self-ligating brackets are a bit smaller and equipped with a small spring-loaded or manually operated “doors” that hold the archwire in place.

Benefits of Demon braces are higher aesthetic, less therapy time, better oral hygiene and fewer visits during therapy.Damon Braces are also faster than traditional braces, more comfortable, and virtually invisible,” says an orthodontic expert from Hampstead Orthodontic Practice

With smaller brackets and absence of ligatures, these braces are less striking then traditional metal ones.

The force from the archwire disperses onto ligatures and brackets. Now, without ligatures, force is transferred directly onto the brackets, thus onto teeth, assuring faster movement within a shorter amount of time. Since dispersing is gone, it is noticed that therapy time is reduced on average for as much as six months.

Maintaining oral hygiene is proven to be difficult when having appliances inside your mouth. But, with fewer the parts present that makes it easier to clean. Ligatures are the ideal place for remained food and plaque to collect and with that out of the picture this type of braces are much easier to maintain.

Interesting point of view is that once there are no ligatures to adjust and replace, visits during treatment are reduced and time between them is prolonged. Less time in office equals more free time.

There are no specific disadvantages to Damon braces.

There is always an obvious appearance of braces and regular inconveniences when adapting to any type of braces.

Some of the terms describing Damon braces are Smart Brackets and Self-ligating braces.

Advancements in technology and materials are providing new possibilities, making Damon braces out of ceramics and glass-like materials.

Damon Clear offers advantages of regular Damon braces with teeth-colored brackets, making them even more discreet.

What are Damon Braces?

Self-ligating braces are the perfect option with little extra cost over traditional braces, providing the same effect for shorter therapy time.
