Home Security Tips for the Holiday Season

The holiday season is a great time to leave the nest for a change of scenery and some down time with family and friends. You pack your car and half way down the street, your mental checklist goes off, “did I turn the stove or hair straightener off, or did I turn the alarm system on? did I lock the door?”

The only stress that should be on your mind is to either spend your day relaxing or strolling the streets for souvenirs.  We have put together a list of things to ensure your home is armed with the right security solutions to stay on guard from unwelcomed guests.

Alarms: There are numerous alarms in the market.  Find one that fits your budget and can be connected to your smartphone to ensure everything is secure and can be monitored if necessary.

Cameras: Helping you spy on your invited guests and some of those uninvited guests. This is especially necessary if you live in a compromising neighbourhood, but also for anyone that would like that extra protection.

Alarms and cameras can sometimes come in a package, look for the combined deal to save on some coins. These two are also the ones that are constantly being updated due to better technologies.

Get Neighbourly: The best way to ensure the safety of your home is to live amongst good neighbours; you can achieve this by befriending the neighbours with a hello. It helps to have a neighbour buddy check in on the house whilst you are away.

I See You: Eliminate hiding places for burglars. It is advised to ensure that the trees and shrubs are trimmed, and the fencing lowered enough to increase the front of house visibility. This will eliminate potential hiding spots.

Lock your Keys in: Try and avoid leaving the keys under a door mat or a pot plant, whilst this may seem like a great hiding spot at the time, you might regret it later on. 

Lights, motion Lights: Motion sensor lights are a great safety feature to deter potential intruders. Have these around the house to avoid any blind spots.

Look, Lock and Leave: This applies to the windows and the doors. Oftentimes its easy to have the window cracked open to let the air in, have them key locked when leaving. Ensure all access to the outside is locked with a key or code.

Secure the Backyard: Ensure all borders are secured with fences and garage doors on both sides; this will make it difficult for burglars to break and enter via the backyard. Also, make sure all tools are kept inside and not displayed in plain sight for the intruder to utilise. 

Security screens and doors: Security anything is tested and are more secure than generic windows and doors, comes with specific security features, investing in a good security window or door can prove to be a long term investment. Choose one that is recommended by crime stopping agencies.
