Trying to efficiently pack boxes while dealing with piles of unorganized clutter can be a maddening endeavor. It’s all those little things that just seem to hang around in every room, almost taunting you day in and day out. You’re not alone in the battle against clutter. In fact, the National Association of Professional Organizers estimates that 65 percent of Americans struggle with disorganization.

If you are moving soon, your first step should be to reign in the clutter and get started on the right foot when you move into a new home. Below, you’ll find a few key steps to help you beat clutter.

1: Sort Efficiently or throw away. If you’re based in Essex and you are hiring a skip in Basildon, we recommend Mackers.

The key to efficient sorting is to have a good system that’s easy to follow. Split your boxes into three categories.

  • Keep
  • Rid
  • Store

Keep: These boxes will house everything you plan on taking with you to your new place.

Rid: This box will contain everything you plan to either donate, recycle or throw away.

Storage: This is where you’ll put all the items you won’t keep at the new place, but don’t want to get rid of.

2: Be Ruthless

Decluttering is never easy and will almost certainly require you to make some hard choices about what you really need to keep and what needs to go. This is especially true when it comes to clothing. The average person wears about 20 percent of the clothes they own. That means 80 percent of your wardrobe is just taking up space in the closet or dresser.

When going through your items, ask yourself when was the last time you used or wore something? Do you really love that particular item, or is it something you could do without.

3: Clean Off All Flat Surfaces

Every flat surface in your home can become a magnet for clutter. This includes counter tops, shelves, and the top of appliances. It’s easy to just throw the mail or magazines on any nearby surface and tell yourself you’ll get around to sorting it soon. Before you move into your new home, develop a sorting system that will force you to sort mail as it comes.

4: Tackle the Kitchen

If you’re like most people, your kitchen has become a dump zone for random gadgets that haven’t seen use in ages. Before you pack the kitchen, go drawer-by-drawer and cabinet-by-cabinet and plan to recycle or donate any item or appliance you haven’t used in a while.
