Wedding First Dace: Modern or Traditional?

Weddings are incredibly memorable events, which is why both the groom and the bride invest a lot of time in trying to make it perfect. The groom often toils over what type of suit or tuxedo to get, while the bride spends a great deal of time on finding the perfect dance and the perfect accessories, such as the ones from Glitzy Secrets. All aspects of the wedding are going to be carefully observed, photographed and even filmed. Of course, this includes the dance, which is why often times the bride and the groom spend a great deal of time on this aspect of the wedding too. As far as the traditional vs modern debate goes, the answer is quite simple: whichever one you prefer. However, we’re going to discuss a few things to keep in mind when it comes to both of these styles of dances.

Traditional Dance Order

As far as traditional weddings go, there is a specific order one can follow. Of course, just like any other aspects of the wedding, this order can be changed however the bride and groom please. Usually, after the bride and groom are introduced to the wedding party, their first dance begins. Next up, the bride and her father start dancing, while the groom dances with the mother of the bride. Following this, the father of the bride dances with the mother of the bride, while the groom asks his own mother to dance. Finally, the parents of the groom dance together.

After this, every one of the groomsmen can dance with the bride, though the best man usually starts. The groom can dance with the bridesmaids, and this can go on for an entire song, or for part of a song. After all of this is done, the rest of the wedding party can join them on the dance floor.

Modern Wedding Dances

Couples are starting to become more and more creative when it comes to their dances, breaking the boundaries imposed by the traditional order. They’re starting to introduce lots of new moves on the dance floor. Some of these dances are choreographed, which means that learning them can mean that the bride and groom have to dedicate plenty of time for it. A great idea for those who like to surprise their guests is to start off with a slow song, and then have the music stop, and the bride and groom start to bust some funny moves. Alternatively, the couple can choose to involve the bridesmaids and the groomsmen in their first dance, creating something like a stage production.

General Tips

For this first dance, it’s best to choose a song that you both love, and which reveals something about your relationship. Even if you choose not to choreograph your dance, consider practicing dancing on your chosen song before the big day. This is just to ensure that there will be no embarrassing clumsiness in front of all of your guests. On the other hand, if either or both of you have very little experience dancing, it may be a good idea to take a few lessons from a professional, since even a small number of lessons can lead to a big improvement. Finally, it’s important that both the bride and the groom wear shoes that are comfortable for dancing. They can change them right before the dance.

After the Dance

After the first dance as a married couple is over, and all of the other parts of the traditional template are satisfied (that is if you choose to opt for it), most couples choose the following songs based on who their guests are, and what they prefer. Of course, the wedding is all about the bride and groom; however, it’s important to also consider the guests and make sure that the music isn’t something they are utterly going to hate.

It’s a great idea to start off with mild, perhaps even slow music. If you’ve got grandparents there, they’re probably going to appreciate some music from their time. If you want to then transition into something like hip hop, you can let the guests know that there is going to be a transition later on, so that they can have their fun in the first part of the evening, and leave when they sense that the transition is taking place. Finally, it’s always a good idea to involve all four of your parents in the music selection process. This doesn’t mean that they should pick all the songs, but it would be nice to have at least a few songs that they like.

The first wedding dance is a wonderful opportunity for the newly married couple to show off their personalities and love. As such, they should feel free to opt for whatever type of dance they prefer.
