Getting your hands on a piece of furniture that not only looks good but also fits where you need it, is almost impossible. Unless, you go ahead and have something made by a professional for you. Or, you decide to make it yourself. The second of those two options is the most affordable. But, it’s not the easiest.

Before taking on the task of building a piece of furniture, you should research exactly what you’ll have to do to get it done. You’ll likely need to invest in some cheap tools, and learn a couple of handy tricks along the way. Anything you learn while doing this will stay with you for the rest of your life, though. Making it an enriching and worthwhile experience. This post will take you through some of the best materials to look at when building for the first time!

  • Pallets

When it comes to hardy, long-lasting wood, pallets should be your first choice. Pallets are designed to be tossed around and support large amounts of weight. This means that only high-quality wood can be used to make them. You can usually pick up pallets for nearly nothing, and they’re easy to repurpose. Pallets are great for making tables, decking, chairs, worktops, and much more. Just make sure that they haven’t been treated with any nasty chemicals if you intent to burn or sand them.

  • MDF/Other Particle Board

MDF stands for medium-density fibreboard. It’s made by compressing and heating wood fibers with a resin binder. The result is a wood product that is strong, light, and much denser than plywood. MDF is great for projects that require large painted surfaces, but it’s also great for desks, shelves, tables, fabrication, and more. A lot of companies offer cutting services for MDF. Just head to your local hardware store and see if they have any in stock!

  • Scaffolding

Scaffolding would be most people’s last thought when it comes to building furniture. But, you must’ve seen loads of slick, modern houses with gray stainless steel poles in them by now? Current trends follow industrial styling ques. So, what better way is there to embrace that than by using industrial gear? Scaffolding is incredibly cheap, and it’s also strong. You can get loads of different fittings to make scaffolding work in different ways. It makes great desk legs, TV stands, bookshelves, and more.

  • Fabrics

For upholstery and fabrics, there isn’t one clear winner. But, there is a good method to get your hands on them! Charity shops will have loads of clothing and other fabrics, like curtains, for nearly nothing. The items that they sell will always be clean, and will often be higher quality than you would be able to afford new. You might have to visit several stores before finding something good, but it’s worth it. You can also search for cheap fabrics online, and you might find some good deals.

All that’s left to do is get planning and on with building your furniture. Remember to do plenty of research, and plan your furniture out before spending any money. Have fun!
