Pushing Up Daisies: Reworking Your Garden

There’s so much you can do with a garden: make it entirely beautiful place, or turn it into a productive den, or hold the best parties you’ve ever known out there! Now that spring is almost here, and we’ve got just a bit of winter left, it’s time to make sure your garden is in top form for all the decorative and nutritional plans you have in store. Maybe this is your year for being the best gardener on the block, and if so, here’s some of the best tips for you to get started with.

Get the Weeds Out

Even throughout the winter these little pests can thrive, as it’s usually the entrance of summer that gets rid of them. Winter conditions can’t kill off the seeds, even if it means the weeds themselves don’t flower from the soil, and the wind conditions can blow seeds all around a neighbourhood. With that in mind, you might have what feels like hundreds of dandelions and other common garden weeds breaking through the cracks in your paving and messing up your lawn.

Improve Your Grass Quality

If you have a lawn that during the summer was as green as emeralds and made you incredibly proud, it’s time to recreate that look for this year too. You can easily foster a healthy environment in your lawn alone by trying a few techniques to let water be better absorbed and earthworms move freely in the soil. One such way is to aerate your lawn, which involves punching some holes through the grass with a depth of about 3 or so inches.

On the other hand, if you know your soil is top quality, you can work on the aesthetics alone. Over particularly dry or cold periods grass can seriously suffer, so make sure to take an extra ounce of care with it now. If you have a huge grass epidemic on your hands, you can use a touch of lawn seeding to plant new grass seeds to grow stronger than the ones that are turning brown and dying off as we speak.

Turn Over Your Soil

If you’re preparing your soil for some major planting, there’s a lot you can do depending on the type of soil you’re using. Clay soil, for example, needs some coarse sand mixed in to make it usable for all the vegetables and flowers you’re planning on making an arrangement with. Ultimately, make sure you’ve followed the right steps for your type.

Soil is where roots get all of their necessary nutrients from, so in the preparation stages of gardening you need to pay special attention to it. You can dig some holes in your garden to remove soil from and then turn over, mixing in the dead plants you find to add an extra layer of goodness. It’s all in the name of good household health, so get it done as soon as you can!
