This online HAZWOPER 40-hour course offers 40 hours of training in OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response standards. This course meets the training requirements of OSHA standard 29 CFR Part 1910.120. Workers must complete HAZWOPER training prior to starting work in uncontrolled hazardous waste operations.

HAZWOPER training equips cleanup workers and emergency responders to operate in hazardous situations safely. This training covers policies and practices that minimize the chance of illness and injury from harmful exposures at work.

OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER Training: Who Does it Benefit?

For most workers new to emergency response or uncontrolled hazardous waste, 40 hours of HAZWOPER training is required. This applies to all site workers, such as equipment operators and managers and supervisors on the job.

This training could be required for:

  • Equipment operators
  • General laborers
  • Other site workers
  • Supervisory and on-site management

This 40-hour course is for workers who are most at risk. 24-hour HAZWOPER Training is suitable for workers and supervisors who may only be on-site occasionally and are unlikely to be exposed beyond permissible exposure limits. Each year, all HAZWOPER-trained workers must complete an 8 hour HAZWOPER Refresher Course.

HAZWOPER Standards Cover Different Types Of Work

OSHA standards state that HAZWOPER training is required for workers and employers who are involved in five types of operations.

  • Government bodies require uncontrolled cleanup of hazardous waste
  • Corrective actions for cleanup operations at Resource Conservation and Recovery Act sites
  • Treatment, storage and disposal of hazardous wastes (TSD) facilities
  • Operation at non-TSD facilities which produce hazardous waste
  • Response actions in an emergency involving the possible release of hazardous substances
