Is This Water Safe to Drink? 4 Ways to Purify Water in Your Home

We all know that drinking water is vital to our survival, but what most people don’t know is that nearly one in four Americans’ drinking water comes from a contaminated or untested system.

Drinking contaminated water can cause serious health concerns. So before you grab a glass and fill up at the tap, consider installing a water filtration system in your home.

There are several ways to purify water, so you need to pick the method that addresses your most significant concern. For some, this could be removing sediment, and for others, it’s removing chemicals or hard metals.

Keep reading to learn about your different water filtration options.

1. Boiling

This is the most traditional method for purifying water. This method tends to take a while to accomplish. Then you have to wait for the water to cool. Drinking hot water isn’t that pleasant unless you’re making tea.

This method also doesn’t remove any solid contaminants. So you’ll need a second filtration method for this part of the purification.

2. Distillation

This method is similar to boiling. You can DIY create your system or buy one that’s already built. You need a container that can heat the water to its boiling point.

Then you need an exhaust pipe for the steam. It should connect to a cooling coil. At the other end of the coil, you need a container that can collect the distilled water.

Purifying water with this method will leave clean water in the collection tank and all of the harmful stuff in the evaporator tank. This method will also remove good stuff, such as beneficial salts.

3. Ozonation

If killing harmful microbes is your goal, then ozonation is an effective method. This method uses an ozone generator that gets submerged in the water. Ozone is then bubbled throughout the water to treat it.

This method will kill viruses and biological contaminants that react to oxygen. It also cleans out the harmful metals. These would be iron, sulfur, and manganese.

Water that goes through this process will have its distinct smell and taste removed. The ozone used is made from pure oxygen, which will revert to its original state of oxygen and disappear from the water.

4. Filtration

There are a few different methods for filtration that include carbon, UV, ionic, sediment, ultraviolet, and mechanical. These filters function by pushing the water through the filtration material.

As the water moves through the filter, it becomes clean of sediment, microorganisms, and anything else that’s potentially harmful.

For this purifying method to remain effective, the filter must stay clean and clear. For this to happen, you’ll need to clean or replace the filter regularly. You can read this article to learn how to replace your filter.
