How St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated

St. Patrick’s Day has almost arrived. With the Coronavirus pandemic situation, we can already guess that the celebrations are going to be a bit different this year. It has been difficult to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in its usual festivities and in the ways that most people usually celebrate the occasion. The events had to be muted pertaining to the restrictions laid down across the globe in lieu of the spread of COVID-19 virus. Here is How St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated all across the world?

But even then, with the world slowly coming to a normal, the celebrations are not going to be any less when normality resumes. Betway Casino has put in some efforts to point out how the Irish patron saint’s day is celebrated all across the world. From the US to India, St. Patrick’s Day is not just a festival in Ireland, but has become a global festival. And with 80 million people around the world claiming Irish ancestry in the 21st century, the celebrations are certain even during these unprecedented times.

St. Patrick’s Day: How It Is Celebrated Around The World?

St. Patrick’s Day is a festival native to Ireland. Every year, over 500,000 people visit the St. Patrick’s Festival in Dublin, spending over €74m during the five-day festival. But the Irish capital, or Ireland is not the only place to go green on the day. To begin with, the first recorded St. Patrick’s Day parade was organized in Florida and not in Ireland. This was quite natural as the USA was a popular destination for Irish settlers since the 17th century.  In the 2019 census, more than 32 million Americans claimed to have an Irish origin.

St. Patrick’s Day is a public holiday in four countries and is celebrated in several other countries across the world. In 2019, 400 landmarks across 50+ countries were illuminated in green for the occasion. This included key locations like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Sydney Opera House and the Great Wall of China. Let us now take a look at how the festival is celebrated at various major locations across the world.

New York, Chicago and the entire USA

The first St. Patrick’s Day parade was held in New York City in the year 1762. This is the place from where the tradition of wearing green was popularized all across the world. New York City hosts the world’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parade, that usually includes 150,000 marchers. Not just that, in Chicago, 50lbs of green dye is poured in the river to give it the emerald hue and the entire country sees 13 million pints of Guinness drunk with over $6.16bn spent around the country.

London

London’s celebrations include live Irish music performance in Trafalgar Square and the London Eye being lit up in green.

Sarajevo

Sarajevo Irish Festival for the occasion hosts Irish theatre companies, folk musicians and cinema.

Mumbai

The Gateway of India is turned green during a two-day festival.

Montserrat

Montserrat – a British Overseas Territory, sees huge celebrations with colorful displays and troupes of dancers on the street.

Singapore

A Harley Davidson convoy leads the parade in the city, the largest parade for the day in Southeast Asia.

Sydney

The Sydney Opera House turns green amongst other celebrations.

Tokyo

The I Love Ireland Festival is hosted annually with one of the parades hosted in Japan.

Buenos Aires

Over 500,000 people crowd the pubs of the downtown street of Reconquista to join a party and celebrate the event.
