What to Do With Old Furniture

Furniture is funny. You want it to be just right, but it’s expensive, and your taste changes. You can easily find yourself sticking with something that you don’t love anymore because it cost a lot of money and you feel bad about replacing it. You shouldn’t force yourself to stick with something that you are no longer happy with, but, that doesn’t mean you should give up on something on a whim or waste something that’s still got plenty of life left to give. Here are just a few of the things that you could do with your old pieces.

Sell

If you are desperate for something new, but there’s nothing wrong with the old item, you can always sell it on and put the money towards your new purchase. Before selling, take a look at the item and be realistic. Is it something that you definitely no longer want? Is it safe? Is it in good condition? And, would you be happy to buy it in its current state? Then, be realistic when it comes to how much you can expect to get for it. Look on eBay and other selling sites to see what similar items are selling for. You may find that it’s not actually worth it.

Donate

Donating furniture is a fantastic way to help those that need it. Furniture donation is a wonderful way to give people a start. Whether you donate to a charity, or to people that you know that are just moving into their first home is up to you. But, there’s always someone that needs help. Before committing to making a donation, go through the same checklist as for selling, making sure you are certain and that the item is safe and working.

Upcycle

If you no longer love the item, but you don’t think you are ready to part with it either, upcycling can be a fantastic option. Take a look at Pinterest for some ideas, but there is a lot that you can do with old pieces of furniture, as long as they are still safe. Simple changes could include sanding a dresser down and painting it a different color. Large things could be completely repurposing an item by giving it a whole new use. Whatever you choose, take your time and do the job well. This is furniture for your home, after all, you wouldn’t buy furniture that wasn’t great quality, so don’t make it for yourself. If you’re still not sure after your project is complete, you can still sell or donate it.

Put it in Storage

If you’re not sure, or you are moving to a new house soon and want to keep your options open, hire a storage unit to keep your furniture until you decide what to do. Furniture is expensive, so take your time and don’t feel that you have to be rushed into a decision.

If your old furniture isn’t in a good enough condition to be sold, donated or upcycled, take it to a recycling plant instead of just throwing it away.
