Once the NEET exam is over, students need to follow a post-exam process which includes getting the NEET Answer Key and estimating the score. Further, students need to await the NEET results, the qualifying cut-off and counseling eligibility criteria which play a critical role in determining their admission into the MBBS/BDS courses.

Before NEET, different medical colleges and/or universities would conduct their own entrance examination. Therefore, a student aspiring to get admission to an MBBS or BDS course needed to appear for all the exams separately. With NEET, all these exams have been brought under a single umbrella. However, this also means that the number of applicants runs in lakhs as compared to a fairly limited number of seats. Also, from 2019, the National Testing Agency (NTA) will conduct NEET.

The NEET Answer Key

As soon as the exam is over, most students want to know how they fared. While the results take around a month to process, the NTA releases the NEET Answer Key before the results. This allows the students to compare their responses with the answer key and estimate their score. However, you can know your rank only after the NEET results are out. After the exam, many prominent coaching institutes also release their own answer keys to help students estimate their final scores.

What to do after NEET results are out?

Once the NEET Results are out, the NTA will display the minimum percentile required to qualify for NEET Counselling. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) along with several other State Counselling Authorities conduct the counseling process. You will need to register for both the State-level counseling as well as the All-India-level counseling to participate in both processes.

MCC Counselling

The NTA’s responsibility ends with conducting NEET. The MCC declares the NEET results, All India Ranks and marks of all applicants to all counseling authorities at the state/national levels. Further, on behalf of the MCC, the DGHS (Directorate General of Health Services) conducts the counseling for the 15% AIQ (All India Quota) seats in Government Dental and Medical Colleges (except in Jammu & Kashmir). Also, for all seats in Central and Deemed Universities.

There are 2 rounds of counseling for Government Colleges and 3 rounds for Central and Deemed Universities. Further, the MCC declares the number of available seats before each round.

State Counselling Authorities

The State Counselling Authorities conduct NEET counseling for the remaining 85% seats in Government Dental and Medical Colleges (all seats in Jammu & Kashmir colleges).

What is the All India Quota or AIQ?

All Government Dental and Medical Colleges surrender 15% of their total BDS or MBBS seats for the All India Quota. Also, after the second round of counseling, all seats that remain unfilled are reverted to the State Counselling Authorities.

Therefore, it is important for every candidate to keep a tab on the counseling dates and prepare himself/herself for counseling. You can participate in both AIQ and State Counselling at the same time.

Steps for NEET Counselling

The NEET Counselling is done online in two rounds. You need to register with MCC and obtain a password.

The procedure for AIQ counseling is as follows:

  • Registering for counseling
  • Post-registering, you need to click on the option ‘Choices Available’
  • The screen will auto-populate with your information and display the choices available to you for admission and also the number of seats available.
  • You need to select the colleges based on your preference (in that order).
  • After selecting, you need to enter your password again and click ‘Lock Choices’.
  • After locking the choices, you cannot make any changes to them. Therefore, do it carefully.
  • Based on your rank, category, and preference, you are allotted a course and college after a few days.
  • You need to confirm the seat by reporting to the college and paying the course fee.
  • Candidates who don’t get a seat in the first round for any reason are eligible for the second round of counseling.

The procedure for State Quota seats is as follows:

  • You need to register on your concerned State’s counseling website
  • It is conducted based on your rank in the State’s merit list

Documents Required for Counselling

You will need your Admit Card, your result and rank letter, and your birth certificate. Further, from your academic documents, you will need your Class X & XII certificates along with your Class XII mark sheet. You will also need 8 photographs (passport-sized) which must be the same as affixed on the application form. Additionally, you will need a proof of identity, a Category Certificate (if applicable), and an online generated Provisional Allotment Letter.

Summing Up

As soon as your exams are over, you need to regularly check the official website for NEET as well as the State counseling websites for updates. While the dates are declared earlier, there might be some last-minute changes that you need to stay aware of. By the time your NEET results are declared, you need to have clarity about the colleges that you want to opt for in decreasing order of preference. We wish you all the best for your examination.
