What is Champagne and How is it Different to Other Drinks

Champagne as a drink stands out from other drinks – the name has a cache, and it has history, and when you hear that word its has a whole host of different associations that come to mind. Champagne is a drink that peaks of class and celebration.

What Is Champagne?

Champagne is not just a drink – it is a region in France. That region is the only region that can produce a drink that can genuinely use the name Champagne. It is made of three types of grape – Pinot noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay.

The name is protected by the Champagne Bureau, and they are very active in this role. When you have maintained such high quality for this long it is something you value.

You may not want to drink it all in one go and may want to savor it. A drink like this is something you want to treat properly, and Coravin Review can help with that.

What Is Prosecco?

Prosecco may look more than a little like Champagne, but it Italian, rather than French. In the same way that Champagne must come from that very specific region of France to be considered Champagne, Prosecco must come from the Veneto region of Italy.

Within the region of Veneto the small village of Prosecco, where the drink got its name from, Like its French cousin, protects the name just as vigorously.

Prosecco refers to not only a sparkling, but also a semi-sparkling, and still wine. It is made primarily from Glera grapes, though others can be added, and unlike Champagne, which is fermented in the bottle, Prosecco is fermented a second time in steel tanks.

What Is Sparkling Wine?

Sparkling wine is a much more general term that can refer to basically any wine that has bubbles in it. As an umbrella term, it actually covers the other two types of wine, Champagne and Prosecco, and a whole host of other wines that come from all over the world.

Apart from Champagne and prosecco, the other most popular type of sparkling wine is Cava. Cava is sometimes referred to as the “Spanish Champagne’, though no one officially calls it that. It uses the same method of production as Champagne and is made from a blend of Macabeo, Parellada and Xarello grapes.

The Best Drink For You

As with any wine, choosing the sparkling wine that you like the best is going to depend on the budget you have in mind, and also the taste.

Different grapes are going to produce flavors, as are different methods of production. Some would say that there is only one choice – that Champagne, like the original, should have your loyalty. It is entirely possible you may have had one of the other two, Prosecco and Cava, and mistaken them for Champagne, because they do taste great, and have their own fans.

It would not be the worst idea in the world to buy a bottle of each and have a taste test and see which one you actually prefer. Just because your sparkling wine has neither the pedigree or the name of one of these great wines on its label, it does not mean that it is a bad win either. Though, Champagne will always have a certain je ne sais quoi.
