The chance to live and work abroad for any amount of time – long or short is definitely something that most people have considered at some point in their lives, and it’s something that most would also be excited by and probably jump at the chance to experience, but the problem is that in the past this wasn’t an option for most people because unless you had a lot of money to travel around for the sake of it or were transferred through your job, then usually your job meant you stayed in one place.

However, nowadays, this is becoming more of a reality for lots of people thanks to the ability to do things like making money from the internet, so in this post, we’re going to share with you some of our top tips for things to consider before going abroad for a year to live.

How you’ll make money:

Traveling isn’t exactly the cheapest thing in the world – even as a backpacker staying in budget hostels and living on ramen noodles, you’re still going to need to have some cash to survive no matter where you are in the world, so it’s important to think about how you’re going to make money before you go and decide to travel. For example, are you going to be moving for a job, or are you going to run an online business, pick up odd jobs along the way, or even rent out your place for a year whilst traveling? As long as you know how much you need for your time away, then you’ll be able to plan this ahead a bit.

If you’ll stay in one place:

Just because you move to one place to start your travels doesn’t mean you’ll be staying in one place, and although plans can change and you don’t need to be so rigid with things, it’s important to have something of a plan before heading off and knowing if you’re planning to stay in one place or are planning to go and live in multiple places during your travels.

What documents and insurance you’ll need:

Many countries have mandatory health insurance, so it’s important to find out if you’re going to need this before going, or even if you’ll need some kind of travel insurance that’s geared towards digital nomads. If you need any specific medications or have a hearing problem, for example, then good insurance would allow you to get access to these and also be able to choose from a variety of innovative hearing aids. It’s also a good idea to check if you need things like work permits, visas or anything else that could impact your stay.

If you’ll be allowed to work:

It’s one thing traveling in a country, but if you’re planning to stay there for a longer period, then you need to find out if you’re allowed to work there because if not and you do, then this could get you in a lot of trouble and even see you banned from certain countries for life, which is certainly not a situation anyone wants to find themselves in, but it does happen, so it’s really best to be as prepared as possible for all situations and do your research before arriving.

The good news is that although it’s quite likely you will need some kind of visa or permit to be able to work in the place of your choice, these are relatively easy to apply for online from most countries, and the other great thing is that you typically get pretty fast approval as long as you can show the relevant documentation and have nothing to hide.

We certainly hope that this post has been helpful in showing you just what things you may want to consider before deciding to take the leap and go abroad for a year – as long as you’re prepared for things in advance, then it’s going to be an unforgettable and amazing experience that you’ll treasure forever.
