The perks of being a homeowner include having the power and opportunity to change the way things look inside and outside your place of residence. I’m always excited every time I get the chance to dabble on DIY projects, and home redesign is perhaps one of the grandest projects I could ever lay my hands on.

Aside from making your home perfect for kids, one of the reasons for redesigning your house is to allow our pets to stay inside safe and protected. More than providing them food and shelter, it’s also the pet owner’s responsibility to make sure that the animals are kept away from danger and given ample space to move around.

Have you ever imagined using your loft space or attic as a place where your beloved pets can stay? Let me share with you some tips on why the loft is a perfect haven for your pets, and how you can create a pet-friendly space.

Why use the loft?

My answer: Why not? Most people rarely use the attic, unless they use the space for storage or they have outstanding home design skills to make good use of the loft.

Here are some of the reasons why the loft is a good place to place your pets:

  • Effective use of home space: Instead of building a dog house outside the house or making use of other spaces inside, using the loft is a great way to save on space.
  • Indoor home for pets: The harsh outdoor elements may affect the health of your pets when you place their house or kennel outside.
  • Easier monitoring: Because your pets are inside the house, you can better track their condition.

How to turn the loft space to a pet-friendly place

Here are some tips to prepare the loft for your pets:

  • Do a trial run before a major redesign: Don’t expect your pets to love the place instantly. Much like people need to adjust to a new environment, our pets may also need to make themselves familiar and comfortable inside the loft. If your pets complain for some reason even with repeated attempts or with the presence of their favorite treats, you might need to reconsider the loft redesign.
  • Soundproof the room: Aside from protecting against traffic noise pollution, the purpose of a soundproof room is to prevent your pet’s noise from disturbing the other areas of the home. Making the room noise-free will give your pets a tranquil and calm environment for them to relax and stay in.
  • Pet-proof the space: This involves a lot of factors, mostly for pet safety. Some examples include hiding wires under floorboards, taking away bottled chemicals, and installing access gates.
  • Let natural light in, but take caution: Installing a good set of windows can brighten up the place and give your pets exposure to sunlight even when they’re inside. However, make sure that your pets won’t be able to reach the windows, because this may increase their risk of injuries.
  • Orient everyone in the home: Keeping pets inside the house may tempt your kids to play with them more frequently than usual. Lay down the ground rules to create harmony inside the home.

I hope I have given you enough tips to make you interested – or a bit more curious – in turning your loft or attic into a place where your pets can spend most of their waking hours in.
