We’ve all heard of self-care, but not enough of us actually practise it. Self-care should be practised all year long but seen as we’re moving towards the colder months of the year, it’s more important than ever to take care of body and mind before the bad weather, lack of sunshine and dark nights and mornings knock the wind from our sails. Unsure of where to begin? Don’t worry, read on for some self-care tips and don’t forget to spread the word about looking after your body and mind this season.

Get yourself a health MOT

Getting a health check sounds a little strange, after all, why would you visit your dentist or GP if you weren’t ill? But the truth is, seeking medical advice and getting yourself checked over before you fall ill is the first step towards taking care of yourself. Booking an appointment with your dentist – like Docklands Dental – will make sure that any potential oral issues you have are taken care of before they take hold and become much more serious – and expensive!

Booking an appointment with your GP gives you chance to discuss any worries you have regarding your physical and your mental health. That irritating cough that won’t budge, a pain in a joint that won’t quit, even getting your blood pressure and cholesterol checked will help set you up for the months ahead. If you’re worried, anxious, or have been feeling low and don’t know what else to do then make sure you take the time to speak to your GP. Don’t suffer in silence.

Stay active

Don’t worry, you don’t have to sign up to any cross country marathons! Everything seems to slow down in the winter months and that includes us! It’s all about getting your blood pumping, so getting up, getting active and moving around will give your body, mind and immune system a much needed boost! You don’t even have to leave the house if the weather is bad – check out YouTube for some workout videos or do some exercises in the living room.

Wash your hands

A cough here, a sneeze there…we’re all at risk from germs, bacteria and illness. Cough and flu season is almost upon us, so you need to get into good habits now, so your body has a better chance of fighting those nasty germs off. Whether you’re using public transport, work in an office or are just doing jobs at home, get into the habit of washing your hands and digits thoroughly. Don’t have access to a sink? Get yourself some hand sanitiser and keep it on you.

Socialise

It can be tempted to hide away inside when the cold weather hits, which means that our social lives can suffer. But keeping busy and socialising with friends and family is crucial to keeping your spirits up. You don’t even have to brave the weather, a simple video call over Facebook or skype is a great way to keep in touch and stay connected.
