Tackling Fleas, Ticks and Worms this Spring

It’s extremely common for pets to receive unwanted guests in the form of fleas, ticks, and worms, and it’s never pleasant when they do. Not only will your pet be uncomfortable and unsettled, but you run the risk of infesting your home, which is not what you want to happen. It’s important to know a little bit about these common problems, to ensure you know what to do should they occur, and how to prevent them in the future.

The Types of Parasite/Infestation

One of the most common types of infestation for pets is fleas. Fleas are a small parasite that lives on your pets’ body, which can be very difficult to deal with when your pet has a thick coat. Fleas survive by sucking the blood from your pet, but they don’t have to live directly on the skin to survive. Fleas can survive living in your pets’ coat, which can make it very difficult to tackle. You then have ticks, which just like fleas live off your pets’ blood. Ticks are extremely uncomfortable for your pet and can leave them quite unsettled. By attaching to one area of the skin, ticks then suck the blood from your pet and stay put. Ticks are a danger to our pets, as they can carry diseases which can be harmful to dogs and cats, so it’s always important to have them removed as soon as possible. Finally, worms are a different type of danger to your pet. Worms can come in a range of different types, from tapeworms and roundworms to lungworms which are extremely deadly. Whilst some worms may not be as obvious symptom wise, it’s really important to treat your pet frequently to ensure they don’t get worms.

Different Types of Treatments

With different parasites needing treating in different ways, there are lots of treatments available for you to find the right kind for your pet. Every pet is different, so you may find that certain treatments don’t work as well as others, but it’s always worth speaking to your vet and figuring out the best option for you. The most common treatments, that can be bought in many of your local pet stores, online retailers such as Petwell and supermarkets are shampoos, powders, and spot-on treatments. It’s important to have these to hand in the home, as you never know when they may come in useful, especially at this time of year.

You then have the medication that helps to treat and prevent fleas, ticks, and worms. Pills are used to flush your pet’s system, helping to get rid of the nasty unwanted guests and get your pet back to its healthy condition. For prevention, however, you can visit your vet or purchase spot-on treatments from in-store. These treatments help to prevent your pet from catching anything, and it only takes a few moments to apply! It’s crucial that you keep on top of your pet’s flea, tick and worming treatments, as this will ensure they’re happy and healthy.
