Road fatalities surged more than 15% in the year 2021 as compared to 2020, reaching an estimate of 43,987, as reported by federal transport officials. Since the year 2005, this was seen to be the highest number all over the nation. In fact, the NHTSA or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that this was the largest yearly percentage increase in the history of the Fatality Analysis Reporting System that started in the year 1975.

NHTSA also reported a spike in multivehicle pileup accidents on urban roads by 18%. Road accident deaths that involved a minimum of one large truck surged 15% and fatalities among senior citizens jumped 17%. Bicyclists’ death increased by 5% and most crashes involved alcohol and speeding.

Expert tips to avoid truck accidents

  • Leave enough space while crossing a truck

When you cross a large truck, your visibility gets restrained and you fail to see what lies ahead of you. You can’t view stopped traffic, scary road conditions, or construction. This is why you should leave back enough space between the truck and your vehicle so that you have enough time to react in case the truck suddenly swerves or stops.

  • Be cautious when a truck takes a turn

It goes without mentioning that a truck will require much more clearance to turn as compared to a car. The truck driver also has reduced visibility. Hence, you, being a car driver, if you need to judge the speed of a truck as it nears an intersection, allow more space. Assume that the speed of the truck is more than what you think it is and it will need more space than what you need.

  • Stay away from the blind spots

As compared to other motorists on road, commercial trucks have more blind spots. If it seems possible for you, keep a safe distance from the following areas:

  • The lane that lies on the side of the driver
  • 30 feet behind the truck
  • 20 feet in front of the truck

Always keep in mind that if you can’t see the face of the driver in the rearview mirrors of the truck, this means he is also not able to view you. So, leave enough space and avoid such blind spots.

  • Be clear while giving signals

Before you pass a truck or you think of changing lanes or turning, it is vital to give clear signals so that the truck can predict the actions that you’re going to take. Unlike crossing a car, make sure you use the signal sooner than you otherwise would so that the truck driver gets enough time to adjust his driving actions.

  • Stay away from distractions

This is a no-brainer but yet it had to be mentioned in this list. Distracted driving increases the risk of accidents. Don’t get involved in activities that need your concentration or that demand your eyes and hands off the road. Never use cell phones, don’t text people or listen to music while driving.

Even after following these precautionary steps, if you still meet with accidents, get the help of a law firm like Ladah Law Firm. They have the best lawyers who can walk you through a personal injury claim.
