What is an outside bet?

An outside bet is a bet type that has many potential wagers under its belt, all of which are determined by the layout of the Roulette table.

When looking at a Roulette table layout, whether that be online or in person, you’ll notice that it’s split into two sections – a numbered grid containing numbers 0 to 36, as well as boxes outside this number grid stating things such as ‘odd’ or ‘even’.

It’s the outside boxes of this layout where you’ll find outside bets being placed in Roulette.

Outside bets and their odds

Now you know where on the Roulette table you need to place an outside bet, let’s take a look at just some of the bets classed as an outside bet, how to place them and the betting odds attached to each bet.

Red / Black bet

This bet type concentrates on the colour of the pocketed compartment on the wheel rather than the number aspect of the game. A red or black bet allows you to place a wager on whether you predict the ball will land in a pocketed compartment that’s either hosting the colour red or black.

To place a red or black bet, you’ll need to place a betting chip(s) in the box marked either ‘red’ or ‘black’, depending on which colour you wish to wager towards.

The betting odds attached to a red or black bet is 1:1.

Odd / Even bet

This bet type concentrates on whether or not the winning number will be of odd or even variety. It’s good to note here, that any zeros in play do not apply to either odd or even. Only numbers 1 to 36 are included in the odd and even bets.

To place an odd or even bet, you’ll need to place a betting chip(s) in the box marked either ‘odd’ or ‘even’, depending on which category you wish to wager towards.

The betting odds attached to an odd or even bet is 1:1.

High / Low bet

This bet type concentrates on whether the winning number falls within the high or low category. For the number to fall in the ‘low’ category, the number will need to be between 1 and 18. For the high category, the number will need to be between 19 and 36.

To place a high or low bet, you’ll need to place a betting chip(s) in either the box stating ‘high’ or ‘low’, depending on which category you wish to wager towards.

The betting odds attached to a high or low bet is 1:1.
